Patch 2.4.3 is LIVE, Cheat Death Nerf Breakdown

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

The patch is now live and while there aren’t very many class changes, (Blizzard said there won’t be until expansion), there are quite a few game changes. This includes 3 noticeable PvP ones that directly affect the Rogue class.

Patch Highlights

To start off, if you’re looking to level up a Rogue, you will now be able to purchase your first mount at level 30 instead of level 40, for the small cost of 35 gold! This will come as good news to people like myself, that hate to quest and level and will take all the help they can get.

Next is my favorite part of the patch – you are now able to purchase a 22 slot bag from Haris Pilton in the World’s End Tavern.  The "Gigantique" Bags cost 1200g each and you can buy as many as you’d like.

On a smaller note, Magister’s Terrace has received a slight nerf. Now that Rogues are capable of clearing it easier, they can obtain their own Shard of Contempt which still remains one of the top DPS trinkets available.

PvP Changes

There were 3 PvP changes in this patch that affect Rogues:

- Cheat Death Nerf
- Mage – Frost Amor, Ice Armor, Mage Armor, and Molten Armor are no longer Magic effects and cannot be dispelled  // Warlock – Demon Skin, Demon Armor, and Fel Armor are no longer Magic effects and cannot be dispelled.
- Rocket Boots can no longer be used in Arena

I was skimming the forums today expecting a lot more crying from people regarding the non-dispellable Mage/Lock buff change. However, I think it was being overshadowed so much by the Cheat Death nerf, that not many people have noticed it or put much thought into it. This is a pretty substantial change to both Mages and Warlocks, and while I’m indifferent on whether they needed it or not, I have no doubt it will make a noticeable difference in Arena. With it being so early in Season 4 I have been experimenting with several class setups in 3v3. Today I queued with a team that me and a couple friends made last week consisting of Rogue/Enhancement Shaman/Holy Paladin. Any time we were in a situation to kill a Mage it was much more difficult than before without the luxury of being able to simply spam Purge off his Frost Armor. The days of Warlocks forgetting to reapply their Fel Armor are over as well. =(

Cheat Death Nerf Breakdown

Cheat Death has gone through some changes over the past year. Starting out as a mediocre talent and then receiving a huge buff in patch 2.3,  it became one of the "must have" talents of any deep Subtlety build – preventing you from being the victim of a quick burst and allowing healers plenty of time to get you heals before you are about to die. Not only that, up until patch 2.4 the talent was bugged which allowed you to absorb 99% instead of 90% like the tooltip read. In this patch, it has received its first nerf, but how big of an actual nerf was it?

The Viable Specs at level 70– PvP and PvE

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

***IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR LEVEL 80 TALENT BUILDS CLICK HERE.

One of the most common questions I’m asked is what the “best spec” for a rogue is. Although it would be nice to have one spec that did everything, the best answer is “it depends on the situation." Certain arena teams or raid setups call for different talent point allocation. Here are the specs I use with a summary of when and why they work:

ASSASSINATION SHADOWSTEP – 20 / 0 / 41

Easily the best overall arena spec at the moment – standard Shadowstep. The only real weakness of this spec is a lack of on demand damage. Its strengths include excellent mobility and survivability. It’s an extreme necessity of the rogue class to be able to stay on their target, and this spec is by far the best for this. The added survivability of Preparation and Cheat Death allows rogues to gear themselves in favor of damage and with talents that increase agility and attack power, this spec has excellent sustained damage.

Variations

  • Imp Expose – Imp Expose variation is probably best used when playing with other melee.
  • 2/3 Lethality – The 2/3 Lethality spec sacrifices what little burst Shadowstep has and is best suited to playing "outlast" games in 2v2 and 3v3, or when playing a support role in 5v5 with other melee

COMBAT MUTILATE – 41 / 20 / 0

My favorite spec to play – Combat Mutilate. This is an all around build that has the ability to drop targets quickly. The real weakness of this spec in arena isn’t the position or poison requirement that rogues often complain about, but instead the susceptibility to kiting and focus fire. Its strengths are its sustained damage when on a target and the ability to deliver controlled burst. Ironically, one of the biggest factors limiting Mutilate at the moment is the strength of Shadowstep rogues in arena. Although Mutilate works decently in certain burst setups, it is generally inferior to Shadowstep on the vast majority of arena teams.

Mutilate in PvE – Yes, it is noticeably lower damage than Combat Swords. That being said, it is very capable of doing comparable and competitive damage in raids. Finishers should be performed at 4 or 5 combo points while prioritizing Rupture over Envenom and always keeping Slice and Dice up. You should also focus on using a finisher as Expose Weakness and Ashtongue trinket expire. The advantages of Mutilate in PvE include quick recovery on healing intensive encounters, as well as the ability to fit well into Hunter / Feral Druid GoA groups while freeing a spot for another buff class in a melee dps group. It should also be noted that Mutilate surpassed Combat Daggers in dps with the introduction of Puncturing Wounds.

  • Solo dps – I have found this to be the most versatile spec when you are playing solo or with a single healer in 2v2. (more…)
