Why use PvE gear in PvP?

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

One of the questions I’m most frequently asked is “do you really PvP in that gear?” Normally in arena, I use around 150-200 resil. In fact, the only time I think that resilience is worthwhile is when you’re playing an outlast setup (say, rogue paladin or rogue shaman in 2v2) or when you intend to tank another rogue (for example, in rmp mirror match).

The strength of the rogue class is when it is played aggressively. If a fight goes longer than your set of cooldowns, your chances of winning abruptly decrease. RMP, rogue mage in 2s, or any offensive arena team is most effective when the fight lasts shorter than a minute. If it goes longer, it begs the question “why use a rogue instead of a hunter for MS effect?” For rmp, the same can be said about using a mage instead of a DK or warlock, or even a priest over a paladin or shaman.

Obviously, many situations call for resilience, and it’s a good idea to have such a set ready for use. I just feel that PvE gear is far better for the majority of arena situations.

Look at what you really get from pvp gear in comparison to pve gear. Some stamina (not a sizeable amount) and crit and resilience for a lot of ap, hit, and haste. You end up having to gem your pvp gear with hit just to reach cap, so you lose even more stats than it would appear at first. In general what you are trading for is  damage for the survivability resilience brings. Without a defensive healer, resilience brings very lackluster surviability, and is far worse point for point than stamina. With a healer, resilience brings you enough survivability to barely live in a situation where you would almost die.

I’m not saying that my way is the only right way, I see a lot of rogues succeeding with pvp gear. That being said, this is my opinion on the subject. Ideally, rogue pvp gear would provide us with enough damage to do our job while giving us the defensive stats to survive, but unfortunately that seems to be reserved for other classes (see hunters and dks).

3.1 info Coming Soon, Rogue PvE Damage Increase on the Way

Wednesday, February 4th, 2009

Looks like 3.1 information is on the way.

We are going to be announcing some of our plans for classes in 3.1 fairly soon. The announcements will be prominent. They will not be comprehensive. We are not going to announce every change we are going to make. We are going to risk giving you some insight into a work in progress, even though we may ultimately decide not to make some of the changes. You guys can help me remind other players of that when they get angry because we didn’t deliver a change that they were “promised.”

Even if they hold back, there’s going to be some big news regarding game play changes coming soon, and hopefully we’ll get an idea of what this first content patch will mean. Here’s some good news for PvE rogues:

As far as melee dps goes, we think rogues, cats and Arms warriors are all a little low. We haven’t announced specific changes yet but they are coming.

I don’t think rogue damage is terrible, but as a class with so few buffs and utility, a boost will be nice. Let’s hope this will return rogues to top spot for single target dps. My guess will be a buff to deep assassination and hunger for blood, and some sweeping changes to a somewhat lackluster combat tree. This way they won’t accelerate rogue damage in PvP, as it’s already strong.

Level 80 Mutilate Raid Dps Cycles

Tuesday, December 16th, 2008

This is an update to the level 70 mutilate raid guide. Although I believe this to be currently accurate, the information provided is subject to change.

Some things to note about this guide:

- Using cut to the chase to refresh SnD with less than 2 global cooldowns remaining on SnD can be dangerous if your expertise and hit rating are lacking because your finisher can be dodged. If you get a lot of dodges and don’t have the best gear, consider doing your envenom at about 3 seconds left, so that if it gets dodged you’ll have enough time to preform another. If you are unable to refresh SnD with your finisher, simply use the combo points on SnD and continue your cycle.

- Envenom vs Eviscerate is still something that isn’t defnite. I personally feel envenom is superior but if you are adamant about using eviscerate, the guide still applies in the same way. Simply sub out envenom for eviscerate. As well, if you are forced to refresh slice and dice and don’t have many deadly stacks, you should be eviscerating. This should occur rarely.

The basic principles of raiding as mutilate

- Keep up hunger for blood, and renew it as late as possible

- Keep up slice and dice, renew it late with a finisher

What to do once you are 80, Lockpicking 350-400

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008

Ok so I’m level 80, now what…

Now that you’re 80 you can begin theory crafting away at what builds and gear you’d like to get. Personally when I got to 80 the first on my mind was to start leveling my professions. This will with very little bit of effort, generate you a nice source of income quickly. That is of course if you have the extra gold to do so without farming/dailies. Almost every profession has something to offer other players and the rarer the service you’re selling them, the more gold you will be able to make. So just keep that in mind. All the new profession masters can be found in Dalaran

The next thing I’d like to suggest for you to do is level certain reputations. The best way to do this now is wear the appropriate actions Tabard (Ex. Tabard of the Ebon Blade) when you do Heroics, generally as a rogue you are going to want to start off with wearing the Knights of the Ebon Blade tabard for your helm enchant. Interestingly, the Sons of Hodir faction do not have a tabard and therefore the only way to level up your faction with them is to do the dailies at Dun Niffelem in The Storm Peaks. I mention this because this faction sells the best Shoulder enchants and even if you don’t have a new pair of shoulders yet, it’s a good idea to start now since there is no “fast” way to level this faction.

I will not be going into rotations as I think the Rogue community should be trying many different variations to truly find the best ones.

***Please Note- Items listed as (PvP only) are going to be used almost exclusively for PvP while everything else can be used for BOTH PvE and PvP depending on situation. Please don’t mistake this as a recommendation to use for PvP over any other item listed, it’s entirely up to you.

LOCKPICKING

Another thing you might want to do is level up your Lockpicking so you can feel like a real Rogue again. Assuming you are BC capped at 350 you will still want to head back to the Southeast corner of Nagrand and pickpocket the humanoids there for Dented Footlocker’s. Do this until 375 then head to Northrend. Pickpocket any Humanoid mob there to get  Reinforced Junkbox’s until you reach 400.

GEAR

***(Don’t need to achieve these just don’t exceed.)

Expertise Rating***

To cap: 214

To cap with 2/2 Weapon Expertise: 132

To cap with Human Rogue wielding a mace/sword:107

Hit Rating***

This is something that has a less exact number. With tons of things such as Misery and Imp FF affecting the number. However assuming that you have 5/5 Precision in your raid spec,  you will need 132 for specials and 755 for white damage to cap. Your poison hit will cap at 315 unbuffed.

Agi and Expertise are your most Valuable stats with Armor pen being the least valuable.

POISON

Mutilate observations IN PVE:

With two weapons of nearly the same DPS go with the faster ones. This applies to your MH as well. Right now I am using [item]Webbed Death[/item] (MH, 1.4 speed) with Instant Poison and [item]Twilight Mist[/item] (OH, 1.8 speed) Deadly Poison and am netting the highest DPS so far over every other combination of the 2 weapons and poisons. You will find that you are still able to 5 stack deadly poison very easily as long as you have the poison talents.

I would like other rogues to try this please and post your feedback in the comments section.

You can expect a full post on Viable specs in WoTLK withing the next couple of days including raiding Mutilate builds.
