Trance and Progressive

I’ve gotten a lot of feedback regarding the music choices I’ve used in my WOTLK arena videos. Before I started using trance and progressive, I was aware that it’s not for everybody. It’s different from the general mainstream you see in most WoW vids although that’s not always the case. Even though not everybody likes it (and I’m not saying you have to) a lot of people who aren’t really familiar with the genre ask me where I find my music.

I really got into it over the past few years although I’ve always enjoyed it. Hopefully this post helps you if you’re interested in this kind of electronic music and don’t really know where to start. I really have to thank Tipss (see mage in eviscerate 8 or arenas: v II and V) for helping me out finding a lot of great tunes.

First, here’s a playlist with a sample of some tracks I like. Unfortunately, I can only use tracks that have already been posted somewhere using playlist.com, so most of these are at least fairly popular and there’s thousands of other great songs I’d like to post, but hopefully you can find something new or something you like here. I’ve also included as many tracks from my recent arena videos as were available on the site. If you’re going to listen I suggest using the shuffle feature.

Standalone player

So that’s somewhere to start from me, but here are some great places to start listening to trance and progressive:

www.di.fm – Great, free streaming music of all genres, but for this type of music check out the trance, vocal trance, or progressive channels. Tons of great shows from some of the leading dj’s in the world (some of which I’ve included below), very few commercials and great quality.

Some popular shows that I enjoy, a good place to start:

Club Elite Sessions – M.I.K.E. (aka Push) – Just after 4pm, thusdays – trance channel – official site

A State of Trance – Armin Van Buuren -2pm, thursdays – trance channel – official site

Trance Around the World – Above and Beyond – 1pm fridays – trance channel – official site

Global DJ Broadcast – Markus Schulz – 12pm, thursdays – trance channel – official site

If you can’t catch the shows they are always available on torrent or direct download shortly after, google is your friend here.

www.shoutcast.com – same idea as di.fm, if you’re not familiar with shoucast it’s server software for streaming media. It allows digital audio content to be broadcast to and from media player software, enabling hobbyists and professionals to create internet radio. Do a search for trance and it should bring up a ton of stations to choose from.

I also often search google for personal or professional trance top lists, like this one. Of course these are matters of opinion, but usually when people sound off about their favorite tracks you’ll find at least a few you can enjoy. You can usually preview the songs by searching youtube.

Some Mainstream Albums and DJs

Anything by Armin van Buuren (ASOT best of, “Imagine”), Tiesto (“In search of sunrise” series is amazing), ATB (“Addicted to Music”), Paul Van Dyk (“Seven Ways” is my fave from him), Paul Okenfold (“Tranceport” has some amazing tracks), Above and Beyond (“Sirens of the Sea” or “Tri-State” are both great), as you can tell by my last vid I’m a big Deadmau5 fan (“random album title”)

I’m really just scratching the surface here, there’s so much more and I’m really only hitting on the mainstream. Hopefully this helps those that ask me where I find this kind of music or people just getting into the genre.

Unmercey 7

(Click Above for the Link!)

This will be my last WOW US video, I am going back to China in 2 weeks to work. This video contains S6 footages on Cho ‘Gal server. It includes arena 2v2, duels, and BGs.

Song list:
Tyga feat. Lil. Wayne – Lay you down
Plain White T’s – Hate
Hollywood Undead – Sell your soul
Anberlin – Undeveloped story
Linkin Park – New devide
Orange range – Hana

Really just another quality video from Unmercey, if this was rushed because he was moving it sure didn’t feel like it. Not a lot of rogue videos can keep me watching but I thoroughly enjoyed the entire vid, but I had no problem watching this one until the end. Video quality was improved from past video, skill was high as always, and shadowdance was a welcome change of pace. Unmercey is also a genuinely nice guy and I wish him the best of luck in China.

RMP Wins MLG

Congratulations to SK US (Pooks, Sekko (Aka Enforcer) and Realz) on winning this leg of the MLG tournament as RMP. They did this in a dominant fashion, defeating the other top RMPs including the much heralded Hydra’s team, Complexity (who they actually lost to in mirror in a close series 3-2), and Gravitas Gaming (aka Duelists going for Glad), a scary RLS run by Kollectiv and Azael, and the ultimate RMP counter comp of BM hunter, Unholy DK, and Paladin (Who made a questionable choice moving to frost for the final). Not only that, SK did it in their first time together at LAN.

What does this MLG say about RMP? A lot of people cry buckets of tears about the strength and high representation RMP currently holds, but does this automatically make it an overpowered comp? There’s no doubt that it’s strong, but I don’t think it’s overpowered.

First, what makes RMP a solid comp is the fact that it has few direct counters. It rarely dominates another composition purely based on class, but at the same time it rarely gets countered directly. You always have a chance to win because it’s versatile and can play extremely offensive.

Second, RMP has been viable since arena came into existence. This means that a lot of players have a lot of experience with the comp, which builds teamwork and synergy and allows for the best strat selection. A team like BM hunter, Unholy Dk, Holy Paladin is something that hasn’t been around for years, so a team running it will lack the synergy and experience to be ready for anything, and that’s what LAN success requires.

Rogue Mage vs Druid Plate strats, Rogue Solo’s Onyxia

Sunday, May 17th, 2009

I find a lot of rogue/mages (including my own until about a week ago) are struggling with the rise in druid/plate teams. While these teams will never by any means be easy, once you have the right strat they feel very much beatable. The use of deadly poison makes the “train the druid and cc the dps” strat very much viable. I’ll briefly go over some strategy but this video should give you a better idea of what I’ve found works against them. Also included a few reaction time clips because I’ve gotten a few people questioning if I react to stuff or just guess, I don’t really care what people think but the clips are just here for fun anyway.

Poisons: First things first, you want to have deadly poison on one hand and wound on the other. IMO wound should be on offhand if possible, so that you can shiv it on if it falls off, and it also allows you to shiv cripple.

Druid Warrior: What we do is have our mage run in and get a nova on the warrior. Open at this time with cheap shot and have your mage deep freeze. This will allow for a clean ToT shatter on the druid with your overkill opener. After the sheep, the warrior will likely trinket –> bladestorm. If the warrior tries to save trinket through 3 sheeps and 2 freezes the druid should die. Once he trinkets, get ready for bladestorm. Feint if possible and immediately get the fuck out. Regardless of your health, once you get away find a safe place and eat / bandage situationally.

Your mage should have enough time here to kite, block the storm if necessary. Wait for Sheep DR to expire if possible and get a full sheep, if for whatever reason your mage runs into trouble cheapshot the druid and blind the warrior. The warrior should, at this point, eat a full blind, 2 sheeps and a deep freeze possibly. This should be enough time to kill the druid. If you are going to die to thorns, don’t, bandage and eat, mage can evocate if necessary. Save your cloak for nature’s grasp or if thorns is about to kill you.

In terms of damage rotation on the druid, I suggest cheapshot –> kidney shot –> imp counterspell — > garrote –> evis. Save at least one vanish for the bladestorm. Don’t forget, mage also has nova to keep that warrior off of you. Resetting is always possible if things get sloppy so long as your mage still has the mana and hp to kite. A frost mage can live for a very long time against druid warrior alone.

Druid / Deathknight

A bit more tricky than druid warrior. I notice most DK / Druids will let the rogue beat on the druid, deathgrip them when possible and do their best to shut down the mage, letting thorns wear the rogue down so that a swing or two will finish them off. What you want to do is if the deathknight rushes your mage, you can cc them as far away as possible from the rogue. Mage should focus on cc off the start while the rogue opens and goes through an initial damage rotation on the druid. Mage should then be able to catch up and finish the druid. It’s really difficult due to lichborn, but the mage can use nova, deep freeze, and rank 1 frostbolt to control the deathknight and take as little damage as possible during this time. Eventually you hope to get a sheep off. If the DK trinkets at any point, blind as soon as possible.

I talked about Druid / Ret here.

Phishy Solo’s Onyxia

Congrats to Phishy (great pvp’r as well) who just posted this video on wcm solo’ing onyxia! You can find his explanation below, something I didn’t think I’d get to see at level 80, cool achievement for the class! Best of luck to all those out there looking to complete this as well.

Hi. This is simply a pve video showing how the rogue class can solo the Onyxia encounter.

Blizzard may have nerfed the “untouchable” rogue by greatly reducing the amount of dodge we get from agility, but they did make a key change to (more…)

Krymu 7 – Rogue PvP

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009

Saw this come out today, definitely worth a watch if you like arena videos. Fast and smooth gameplay, not too long, and the a/v quality is great. The high points for me in terms of play was easily the decision making and strategy being pretty top notch and fast. The clips selected were all interesting, its also always fun to see what people can do with shadowmeld. The only downside in terms of gameplay for me was the use of a lot of prediction, on the blind in the first rogue duel for example or on rogues in arena.

I’m really starting to think predicting can be effective, especially against or when playing as double dps, where people like to trinket fast. I suppose if you gouge after cs or ks if trinkets are up religously it can be very effective situationally (and that’s been demonstrated here or even in unmercy’s past two videos). At the same time I think in a lot of situations (playing in extending games with and against another healer) these strategies really shouldn’t be used, or at least used sparringly, due to the fact that it can backfire. Anyway, I’ll shut up now, check the vid out!
