Blizz Comments on FoK Nerf

posted by Akrios on August 17th, 2009

Rogue
Fan of Knives nerf in 3.2.2
We sat on a change for awhile because we hoped FoK spam was a flavor-of-the-month thing. We thought there was a chance the community would come up with a way to counter it, and since it’s pretty much a one-trick pony, there would be no reason to keep trying it. The community absolutely comes up with counters on its own — the answer to every new strategy should not immediately be for us to nerf it. We also hoped the resilience changes would chill out the damage enough that rogues would stop pursuing FoK spam. That doesn’t seem to be happening.

It is a nerf in PvE, but honestly it’s probably a nerf that was also needed. We wanted to give rogues some AE damage, and we were okay with the big numbers for a long time because they were big when fights were short, but not as good over longer AE fights. (Protip: AE doesn’t just equal trash these days.) Few people would argue that rogue single-target dps on most fights isn’t amazing (“jaw-dropping”? Wink ). As long as rogues can still contribute meaningfully to AE fights, which they will be able to do, they shouldn’t be in any danger of being sidelined.

It’s possible some select fights, notably Yogg 0, may be too difficult without the interrupt, but the encounter designers are prepared to make changes accordingly, and everyone will have access to better gear in the new raid tier anyway.

I asked a rogue in our guild if she thought Blizzard would nerf Fan. She said “They probably need to, but it was fun while it lasted.”

The greatest casualty is probably the loss of so many FoKing puns. (Source)

  1. imo combat spam fok did need to be nerfed, the interrupt seemed like a tad to much

  2. damn 2nd! rofl “the greatest casualty is probably the loss of so many FoKing puns.” also a pun :P

Blizz needs to understand that some comps cannot by any means counter anything and everything people are willing to take advantage of.

  3. Fuck FoK..never needed it in arena’s anyways

    Comment by Wizex — August 17, 2009 @ 6:00 pm

  4. I never went this stupid FoK spec…and I am glad it is getting nerfed. Running around people spamming FoK in arenas is just insanely retarded. As if the mut/prep spec is really any harder…

    Comment by Evolas — August 17, 2009 @ 6:55 pm

  5. Do u think that is retarded? add FoK spec with a /dump macro! that is Dump! lul

  6. I’m pretty sure I was the first person to make a massive “nerf fok” thread in relation to the interrupt on the damage dealing forums, however, I’m glad blizzard has decided that waiting to see what the community will do in response to strategies is a good approach. Obviously, there are exceptions to when this should be applied (shadowfrost dks…), however, I feel that overall, as many fotm comps/strategies have emerged from player experimentation as from blizzards patches, if not more.

  7. Are you retarded?

  8. I agree it’s better not to immediately panic and nerf things. Letting the game play out for a while is great when it works out, but I think blizzard waits a little too long some times (prot pallys have been stupid for half a season, hunters in s5 took way too long to fix). But I do agree that player experimentation is the best way to balance things if it works.

  9. MID ARE YOU OUT THERE?

  10. why is it so hard to make the interrupt simply not work vs players? they can make resil only reduce damage from players, but not make talents work differently vs players. Seems like an easy solution.

  11. I came up with that spe which is imo pretty nice and change a bit my gameplay of spamming mute.

  17. Why is akrioss dodging the nition question!

Anywho, I only like fok for aoe’ing rogues and apping peelz. Wtb energy reduction. Is a n incredibly energy ineffecient ability (not to mention lame as fuck for our 80 ability).

But….we’re the rogue class. We don’t qq we move on!

    Comment by Neurasthenia — August 20, 2009 @ 3:30 pm

  18. “we don’t qq we move on”. Sir, you have clearly never been to the forums. We bitch. A lot.

  20. also off topic: akrios, what do you think about the new expansion, Cataclysm? cos personally i think it looks a lot better then wotlk, finally colorful again, not just snowy white, and theyre gonna bring back some of the classic raids

    Comment by DĂ©lilah — August 23, 2009 @ 1:57 am

  21. Akrios, please, try to hurry to release your next Eviscerate video. I understand that you don’t want to rush it, but doing the exact opposite – to take monthes and monthes to release it, with all the patches that have affected the game since then – is not good either.

Either it is very difficult to get decent footage with Wotlk, which I could undersand to a certain extent, or, you become quite obsessed (in a different way that I am obsessed with your cins ! :P ) with the quality of your movie – which, as you know, are for enterterning purpose.

So please, try to finish the work, or give us a release date. I cannot wait anymore. Bring it on !

    Kind regards,

    baruch

  22. Trailer.

BTW Akrioss, Priest Lock Rogue, what are your ideas on that?

Same thing as PMR for the most part, except for the 14K Chaos Bolts…

Good luck with Season 7 bro, we’ll be missing you on the Tournament Realm.

  23. Hey Akrios, Whens the next post? I don’t see your name on the armory anymore, haven’t heard about anything for a while. Just curious as to whats happening and how Evisc X is going. SUPER excited for it, also WTB more pvp advice posts!

  24. It is certainly because I don’t have played WoW since the end of August, but nothing seems to happen nowadays in WoW… Nothing new on Rogue rogue, nothing new about cataclysm or wotlk… lack of excitement if I may say so.
    Is everyone bored with Wotlk?
Or is it just because I cannot play it for a while (studies, arghhhhhhh ^^).

    Comment by baruch — September 11, 2009 @ 12:53 pm

  25. What’s with Akrios these days? Seems like he deleted his char or something i can’t see it on armory.

    Comment by Anaksha — September 12, 2009 @ 7:08 am

  26. Popular belief is that he has moved to Blackrock under the name Akriios.

    Comment by Faeyna (Kul Tiras/Arena Realm 1) — September 12, 2009 @ 8:37 am

  27. There can be only one Akrios.

People who took this name should change it and leave it to its true bearer.

    Comment by baruch — September 12, 2009 @ 2:07 pm

  28. Our 1 and onli aoe..got nerf??wtf.. Many class can do alot aoe dmg.. Mages can stand there and just click there aoe dmg ,same as hunter, warlock..priest,and druid..

30% reduce dmg..thats alot..!!! Many class can beat us in pvp like pally, mage, bear druid, warlock w/ unlimited fear,

    it is really unfair..

  29. stop crying they could have never gave us FoK ….

    Comment by Herfan — September 16, 2009 @ 10:35 am

  30. @Wtf Blizz: I disagree with you, this nerf goes in the right direction I think. Rogues are not designed to be an AoE dps in PvE; they mainly focus 1 target and switch to another.
Giving them a AoE was right in that it changed a little our gameplay in PvE, and made us feel less useless when fighting multiple trashes.

That being said, FoK damage was so high (with all the talents that surround it) that it was overused and maybe too powerfull too. Personnally I find stupid spamming FoK in PvE as a rogue. This is just not a rogue’s job. What about giving us a Dagger Nova or a Rain of Swords :p

This nerf was also needed in PvP; the interrup was obviously insane (did you check that video showing a rogue spamming FoK in arena, making it impossible for casters to cast anything?).

Still, FoK remains an interesting rogue ability, as our only AoE attack. Getting people out of stealth, killing adds (worms…). Some interesting uses, which do not really rely on FoK damage, so the nerf is ok here too.

[Personal suggestion] Beside this, concerning our range abilities, it would be cool (and not unfair, I think) if Deadly Throw could trigger a poison (for instance the same poison as the MH or OH one, so that we are not forced to apply a third poison). Fok nerf, DT boost !

  32. You made good ideas here. I done a research on the topic and learnt nearly all peoples will agree with your blog. After five minutes of yanking, you’re certainly not going to see the battery meter climb up.
