Prot / Holy Paladins getting fixed

posted by Akrios on August 11th, 2009

Goodbye prot / holy pallys! Prot pallys healing in pvp were such a joke I’m surprised it took this long to fix, but at least it’s getting done. Hopefully this will come with a bit more balancing prior to s7.

We are going to fix the specific scenario where a PvP paladin with a Prot build but spell power gear can heal for more than a Holy build in the same gear. We want to do this without messing up the Prot paladin trying to tank in PvE.

We will probably not make this change before the end of the current Arena season, but you can be thinking about your teams for season 7 with this change in mind.

  6. I’m glad prot healing is done. However, it means prot is back to where it was before wotlk in pvp. Since they capped block value’s influence on Shor and nerfed it by almost 25%, there’s no chance of seeing prot dps in pvp. At least prot warrs aren’t so bad, they got hit with the block value cap, but shield slam was untouched while devastate got buffed. Prot pallies got no such compensation.

  7. We´ve seen this before and that was druids playing restokin back in tbc. However, instead of making the healer role harder for the paladin/adding more offensive utility it kind of made their role so easy by having insanely high heals. Im glad its getting changed (dont like to call it fixed) but there are yet ppls who are going to claim gladiator title only through their overpowered spec. Much like shadowfrost Dks >>

  8. a little off-topic but why dont blizz make just arena nerfs i mean they desttoyd DK tanks due to arena and it would make arena OPness alot easyier to fix I.E. increases period heals by 5% as a talent could say icreases period heals by 5%/3% in arena or battlegrounds

  9. GJ BLizz, Fixing what should’ve been fixed two months ago, and espacially with the upcoming changes to 2v2 where of prot paladins where most dominant. QQ

And, Omegatrigun, did you listen to the word? Protection. Does it sound like a viable dps pvp spec? No. Not every spec is supposed to be equally good in pvp. Or maybe holy paladins should be able to tank a bit in PvE as well? As this would been the reverse content of what your suggesting.

  10. lol…. gg fixing it after an entire season, 2s doesnt even matter anymore, fuck you blizzard and all you paladin players

  11. Would be nice if Blizzard could find out stuff like this a little earlier, imo there hasn’t been a “balanced” (I’m aware that things never can be 100% balanced) season since tbc. It’s always some totally broken class/spec that dominates the shit out of everything.. Enough QQ, at least they’re working on it.

Btw can’t wait for your “big post” later :) Keep up the great work you’re doing with this site ^^

  13. I know a prot/holy paladin(sadly) who crit me with a holy light for 32k… Granted he popped wings, and he gets that extra 20% healing on me, but seriously? 32k? Even with an MS effect up, that would be 2/3s of my hp.

I pray they nerf this into the ground. It’s easier to kill a prot warrior than it is to kill a prot pally- and it takes forever to run them out of mana.

  14. So now Blizzard *IS* balancing for 2v2?
Kinda getting minxed messages here. Some ridiculously overpowered specs are allowed, but others aren’t?
It seems to me like they’re nerfing this because they don’t like the fact that people were healing with a “non-healing” spec, rather than because they thought it was a problem. Personally, I couldn’t care less about flavour, and feel that if you’re going to address this, you should be looking at druids as well…

  15. @Linck: a spec named “Protection” can completely be good – and make sense – for PvP purpose. It is just a spec which relies on absorbing damage to win. What was wrong was just that Protection is not supposed to heal too much: it is (was) both overpowered and inconsistant.

  16. YES!!! I love the old eviscerates(being my favorite 9) and I was dieing to see Akrios vs Neylio again.

    Comment by Drak — August 12, 2009 @ 11:43 am

  17. No, not every spec is equally good. That’s not what I said. What I was saying is that prot pallies have no place in pvp whatsoever while prot warriors are still decent. Yes I know it’s called protection but you can’t really tank someone to death. So if prot pallies aren’t supposed to do decent dps in pvp, where does that leave prot warrs?

    Comment by omegatrigun — August 12, 2009 @ 6:23 pm

  18. The thing about Prot Paladins is that their damage is their Threat, that’s where Righteous Fury comes into play. Also, they still rely on spell power for more damage so they can generate more threat, but Blizz’s band-aid talent to convert Stam to Spell Power is the problem in this whole situation.

A fix for this situation is to change Touched by the Light to work off of a different stat to gain Spell Power from. Strength would be a good one since Defense plate has it and Healing Plate does not.

  19. *sigh*

    * Fan of Knives: The damage done by this ability has been reduced by 30%.

    Combat

    * Throwing Specialization: This talent no longer causes Fan of Knives to interrupt spellcasting.

    Subtlety

    * Honor Among Thieves: A 1-second cooldown is now enforced on how often a rogue can gain combo points from his party via this talent
