Where WoW Stands at the Present

posted by Akrios on June 26th, 2009

After playing this game on and off, from hardcore to casual and back full circle, I’ve come to notice trends and get a feel for where things are at. I want to talk about where things are right now, and what future the game has from my perspective.

New MMOs, Waiting for the WoW Killer?

With a lot of new mmo’s coming up, a lot of people seem to be waiting for the next “wow killer”; the next big replacement. At the moment, although a lot of people see a lot of potential in Aion, I don’t think that will be a game that can really compete in the same market as WoW. The new final fantasy mmo and TOR both have potential, but I think they will aim at a different market, and they are both some time away.   It really says something about blizzard’s strength in the mmo market when the next game I see really ending wow’s reign likely being Diablo 3. Even though it’s not really an mmo, I think it captures the same player base that WoW currently holds, and has the production value and polish that WoW players have come to expect.

Why the Current Slump?

So where does that leave WoW? I think it’s pretty clear that right now, things are in a slump. When I say slump I’m reffering to general interest for endgame players. It’s no surprise as these slumps to happen fairly frequently, at least once a year. Think back to the period in BC before 3.0 landed, or even when it did. With Sunwell cleared and the gear being moot due to the looming expansion, a lot of people took a break and lost interest. Similar slumps happened in the month or so before Ulduar, in the time directly before BC, and generally every time that nothing seemed new.

What else is currently causing this slump in interest? Well first off, WOTLK PvP leaves a lot to be desired. Although it seems to be gradually finding some balance, and hopefully the resilience and other pvp changes of 3.2, WOTLK pvp is far too centered around 3v3 arena. A lot of people backed Blizzard when they made the decision to focus on arena, and more specifically 3s, but the problem here lies in that how often can you 3v3? How often does every team member have time to play?

The potential of each player as an individual has just gradually plummeted since WoW’s release, and although people are quick to say “this is an mmo, you should need others to enjoy it”, I think the days in which your potential as a solo player was greater gave a lot more motivation to spend time playing and building your character. Why build perfect sets when the majority of the result of PvP comes from the actions and decisions of the people you play with?

Another problem causing this slump in interest would likely be diminishing returns on grinding gear. It really feels like just as you finish your patch 3.1 set, 3.2 is right around the corner. Currently I’m missing T8.5 legs to finish my set, but why get them when in a few weeks they will be completely outdated? I really miss the days where I could build a set of gear and it would last me at least half a year, and really differentiate me from other players. A lot of players are motivated to raid because to develop and build their characters gear sets, but what motivation do I have to finish a set when I’ll be replacing it a month later? The fact that everyone’s gear looks the same (and for the most past, is the same) doesn’t help.

By diminishing returns, I also mean that it used to be exciting to see a new wave of gear because it came out so infrequently and it was interesting. Now, new gear comes out faster than ever, and with it comes a new grind. We can chase the apple dangling on a stick in front of us, but when we finally get it, we should be able to finish eating it and enjoy it before a new apple gets thrown in our face. The other question is how many times can experienced players go through the same song and dance of grinding that meaningless set of quickly replaced gear before the cost exceeds the rewards?

Another thing causing the slump is likely that Summer is here. Maybe it’s just me, but in the winter I’m a lot more willing to go into hibernation and play a lot then when I’m on vacation and the weather is nice.

All that being said, I don’t see a comparable game replacing WoW until D3, or maybe Starcraft 2, but that is a far different experience. I definitely forsee this slump ending, but unfortunately 3.2’s new raid instance seems incredibly meaningless and I doubt this patch will see much draw back for players, although there will be a brief jolt. A new meaningless honor-grind BG with vehicles doesn’t exactly spur my interests.

No, I predict that the Icecrown Raid patch will be the big draw that will bring a lot of players back for another WoW run, it should land right as winter nears. A big thing that will influence this is if by then China gets WOTLK, because half the players in the world are still stuck with BC. I’m also willing to bet things will taper off again after that until the next expansion, which should theoretically carry this market of gamers until D3’s release.

  2. Yeah I completely agree with everything you said here Akrios. Gear should not come out as fast as this and I hate the fact that world pvp is near enough dead in Wotlk and that 3v3 arena is the main focus of the game. If blizzard made a new daily area where flying mounts were not useable things would improve. Wtb the icecrown patch as I can see that being great too. Btw, give Eviscerate X! Can’t wait.

  3. yeah. new instances are coming too soon, and I don’t like it. + I’ll be working out of the city for the next 2 months before my studies will continue, so no more Ulduar raiding and probably won’t see the Argent Colesium as soon as it comes out.
P.S.: as an ex-starcraft player I’m afraid that I’ll drop WoW and start (or continue) playing SC2. Although WoW is great and huge. Most ppl say that WoW is likely to become a new cyber-sport discipline, and I’d lie if I’d say “I don’t like that”.
Anyway, I’m a little bit confused with things atm, and just hope everything to get better. Nice article Akrios.

  4. Seriously…this game has been getting more boring by the day. Gear comes out too quickly, arena seasons end too fast, and new raids come out even faster. It just can’t work.

I’m looking for something other than WoW I can play that can give me a good break from it for a while. Any suggestions? I’m a big FPS gamer on Xbox but I haven’t done that in over a year. Any other computer games that are fun to play other than WoW?

  6. The constant flood of new upgrades is really getting old. Stick to what made BC fly and make people work for their shinnies. And give them time to enjoy them… I liked the apple metaphor, it’s a great way to describe the issue. I don’t think the casuals really notice the game’s problems as the more dedicated players, so the current slump shouldn’t really damage the game to badly. However, if it continues, I see the game disappearing from the competitive spotlight. From my perspective (from a rogue’s perspective) this patch is a disaster for the Arena anyway. Blizzard could easily fix the game by REMOVING resilience instead of buffing it. I mean wasn’t that the original game plan for Wrath? They could buff Stamina, replace the Resil from the PvP gear with tons of Stam and minor upgrades to the other stats. But Blizzard will argue that PvP gear will be viable for tanks, right? Simply place the emphasis back or avoidance for goodness sake. Besides, the stronger resilience becomes, the more time casuals have to put in to enjoy both PvE and PvP. Bliz shouldn’t totally blur the line between different gear sets, but in order to keep the majority of their player base happy, a PvE set should be decent in the Arena (and a PvP set decent in a raid). Blizzard tried to balance PvP and PvE from the start and really is going nowhere fast. They can’t split the game into two parts, so they should stop trying to divide the two. Feel free to disagree, but it’s the best thing for most players and Blizzard’s bank account.

  7. If you’re into fps games I’d recommend giving Fallout 3 a spin. The original game is good, just don’t waste your time with the DLCs, should you give it a try. They are really bad.

  8. Akrios you should seriously repost your post on some gamedesigner/blizzard forum for the high heads of Blizz to see, i 100% agree with your points about us being fed new encounters too fast, and with your point about gear.

  9. “I really miss the days where I could build a set of gear and it would last me at least half a year, and really differentiate me from other players.”

So do I. As soon as I finally get decent gear new content comes out. Its been happening sense BC hit. WTB vanilla WoW.

This is why I left WoW for a while before WOTLK.

  12. Well written, and there is definitely some truth behind what you have shared in this article, Akrios. The comparison paling comparison between past and present is grim, however I have faith in Blizzard. I do agree on the pace of content being release, and the emphasis larger arena brackets. In terms of the Crusaders Coliseums format of raiding, its raiding delivered in a whole new package, a method Blizzard has employed in the past and has been both, a failure and success so as far as that goes I suppose we will have to wait until the content patch arrives. Im fairly certain a number of players high end or not, have been satisfied with Ulduar and its diversity to all the player types, casual or not so from this we see Blizzard still hasnt lost their talent for gaming, or giving gamers what they want. In terms of your amusing carrot on a stick analogy, I believe you have the right picture in mind however you have it in a much smaller view than I do, think of that apple being icecrown, and with every content patch comes a dangle, and that dangle tests the faith of every player casual or serious alike, depending on what the content patch delivers the player may decide to give up on the game, or continue playing; I think its at this time the player needs to remind himself/herself of the goodies Icecrown will have to offer.

That being said, thanks for posting and continue posting because im certain that the roguerogue.com fanbase only grows in numbers every day.

This is why I’m most likely quitting when 3.2 hits.
It’s too easy to get gear, and it doesn’t induce the same level of “respect” as in WoW Classic. It’s a lot less rewarding, and it feels more like a grind.
We can’t just keep leveling alts, either. The old content gets boring over 4½ years, and honestly – they should make leveling faster. Sure, you COULD say that one could just use RAF, but not everyone has a friend that’ll level with you the same times as you want to, and also certain countries are excluded from RAF (Denmark is unfortunately one of them)…

  14. Epics don’t mean anything any more :/

I hate the fact Blizz is ruining WoW by making it so easy to get good gear and by removing fun things like World PvP and 2v2 :(

I’m feeling the slump at the moment, I login to do some dailys and maybe some 2v2, then I feel bored and resort to logging out to watch tv or something.

I think 3.2 will be the “should I stay or should I go” patch, then we’ll wait for the news of a really awesome patch before we crawl back.

  20. The problem with this game for me is that it went in a totally different direction than I thought it should have. They homogenized unique class abilities to classes that should never have received them, introduced a new DK class and gave them everything that they missed to add in other classes, PVP IMO was always an afterthought, trying to fix it by applying glue here, sticky tape there, I can go on but I won’t. Anyone who played this game for years, goes into slump cycles – its inevitable. I must have frozen my char a few times over the last 2 years alone. What I’m trying to sum up is:

a> the game focuses on mass audiences – bliz is a massive revenue engine – they have to appeal to the largest denomination when they should be giving a similar level of consideration to the top players that actually *enhance* the gaming experience and make people want to play on those realms where those top classes exist.

b> bliz is going to milk this cow for all its worth – even if that means giving people upgrades in frequent patch cycles, etc. The main attractor to the mass audience is arguably getting that bling – and they will spend countless hours getting it by doing the same unimaginative, repetitious things.

c> for me there were simply far too many negatives and few positives in the game for me to stay plugged into it.

I’ll end my bit here but don’t get me wrong – I enjoyed this game for some time and I’m sure everyone that reads this thread gains something valuable out of the game. The content on this site is simply amazing.

Akrios – keep up the great work.

It seems you trinketed a stun, blinded the rogue, and your mage was spamming poly hopefully it lands after the rogue trinkets.

Of course if you lose most matches like we do when I get sapped, that’s fine, but if you could tell me what the General outcome of a match is when you get sapped.

  31. This game is slowly turning into a real life situation. For the most part people are impatient and want to see new things like an ipod with voice activated commands when the ipod they have now is the exact same. (or new tier, even though it gives you minor stat change people are to greedy and want the best things) This game was very fun at one point when new things came out once in a blue moon. Now when something new comes out I’m the least bit surprised and don’t really care to even look at it because I know something new will be out within the next month. This planet is slowly killing itself and I can strangely link it to this game.

  32. I totally agree with you, it’s sad how each class has lost it’s uniqueness. I mean, you use to have tanks that could do different things, like pallies AoE’d tank, and whatever. But now, everyone does the exact same thing, has the exact same skills, the exact same armor because it use to be hard to get into 40 man raids back in pre-BC, so you saw a lot of people running around with the dungeon blues, and if you had epics, you were considered either lucky or “good”. Now I see rogues running around with full t8 and they look exactly like me and it’s total bullshit.

  50. Akrios, you ever considered making a suggestion post on the official WoW forums? You have alot of good ideas, and although Blizzard ignores virtually every suggestion there’s a few reasons why i think you could make a difference.

    - Very well known, would have alot of support right off the bat.
    - Blizzard seems to take into consideration more often, people who have experienced more of the game, and you playing from vanilla and being an end game player in every aspect in every expansion would probably give you recognition.
    - The first point amplifies the recognition of the second point too.

Another way would be to make a video of all the problems. Videos like that often spread around the net like wild-fire, the more people who agree with it the better. And alot of changes in the past seem to have been helped along by popular videos. Examples are Vurtne’s steam tonk abuse; DK / Ret pally LOLLOLOLO 2600+ SKILLZ videos; video’s of mages in season 1 / 2 going oom in seconds and not being able to get any mana back, etc.

Although I’m 99.9% sure that Blizzard will not change their superior money making formula of new instance + gear set + arena season grind every couple of months, simply because blizzard cares more about the cash (fair enough) than the customer. If there is one WoW community member who could make a difference, it would be you.

You could be the Martin Luther King Jr of WoW lol.

I don’t know how old you are, but when you get into college, you will notice (depending on what you take) that playing this game as well as you do now and maintaing a good GPA will be insane. If you thought it was hard juggling highschool senior year exams and still getting arena games in for the week you’ll quickly see what I’m saying.

  56. age of conan is a great mmo, some of you may have tried it in its early stages when it sucked, but the game has gotten a lot better since release. tbh most of the pvpers in wow have trouble hanging in there, because its more than pressing the buttons in the right order to win

  57. Tbh Akrios U rock m8 and ye I do agree that gear is coming out too bloody fast, it’s pretty insane, ulduar only dropped a few months ago. Kinda sux also as my rogue became my main around the time ulduar dropped n i began playing casually n doing a little arena after quitting hardcore pve on another toon, now i wanna get back into pve but as a rogue this time around but well gear is coming so fast n i’m way behind, thing is soon i will be complaining about being imba geared with nothing left to do ingame as ofc now blizz made gear such an easy grind.lol no more rave about rup crits soon as rup is gonna be some crazy energy saver on tick and(hopefully the procs dont require an insane amount of ticks on rup)and ofc i could pug for the gear which is a bit unsatisfying n random in my view. My point basically is, gear comes too fast and can leave u way behind but at the same time gear is so easy to acquire (to the extent that any bad player wears t8, sorry if I seem elitist there but it’s true, met a warrior in seigebreaker gear which he obviously got in a voa pug and yet he couldnt put out more dmg than my bonescythe geared rogue and a t7/7.5 mage) btw gief more videos n tips bro and good job so far on the site and ingame :)

  58. Damn straight. They should do more small patches and big ones only every half a year at least, like you said.

  59. I couldn’t agree more. And you could have made another comparison in PvP and how gear is easy to obtain.

Not only you can now get it with PvE, and yeh sure you need to do PvP to get WG going but someone else might do it for you and you just go farm the PvP gear, but at this moment, PvP gear is also almost stupidly easy to get.

Back in the days, those with a heavy title and Warlord (

  60. … Warlord (

  61. … Warlord would be indeed considered the good players. Even some days ago I saw a DK with deadly gear, and furious boots if I’m not mistaken, with 1.4k 2v2 rate and no other rates. I then asked what were the rates for the boots (wasn’t sure between 1400 or 1500 and didn’t want to bother to go check it) and he said he didn’t knew. They, as all his deadly gear, were drops from WG..

SO my point. He has no skill in PvP whatsoever as he confessed due to be PvE only, his PvP was a priest, he didn’t even had the required rate for furious boots, and he has the best PvP gear.

This obviously, as you say, takes me the “spark” and will to play, when I’m fighting my way to be the best and get gear i deserve and suddenly I see a player with the same gear as me with absolutely no PvP work.

Also, as you’ve said, I believe the seasons are ending too fast, and the gear is also very easy to get. Perhaps they should add a new category of gear between Rare and Epic so Epic people would actually distinguish themselves from the other ones, and so that once again, becoming full Epic would require work, and not just casual farm in 3 days after you hit 80.

    Just my 27 cent :D

couldnt add text, didn’t understood why

  62. Are you really all bored of WoW?

I don’t really agree with you, saying that PvE sucks because now “casuals” can do it.

As Akrios said, the casuals of the game do spend a lot of time in game. For people who don’t play, those ‘casuals’ have no lives..

I don’t think this is the real problem of Wotlk. I think that it is just a problem of global quality.

Wotlk is good but it is just less exciting than TBC.

It so fun to play during BC; I’m disappointed because Blizzard was supposed to do better, but in fact WoW is still a good game.

Sorry for my poor english, I’m french so it’s hard to say what I’m feeling.

And for T9 and S7 just wtf, pigeon/

  63. Nice blog, I was doing some net snooping and stumbled onto your blog, I used to be wondering if you knew your website is displaying strangely in the K-mellon browser. I can see most of it but the graphics are somehow out of wallop. Most likely not a massive deal since hardly no one utilizes it anymore but I am old school and still run it.
