Plans for Season 6, the Grass is always Greener, Mage / Rogue vs Ret / Healer Strats

posted by Akrios on May 7th, 2009

Plans for Season 6

I have to say, despite the balance changes, I’m finding season 6 to be a real challenge in 2s, in large part due to the fact I’ve decided to stick with mage / rogue. I’ll say right now that priest / rogue looks to be far and away the strongest rogue setup right now, and even as far as double dps goes, mage rogue is mediocre at best. The setup takes a big hit this season. The primary reason for this is the lack of other double dps teams, the increase of druids teams, and the complete lack of rogue survivability without constant heals. Rogue teams are beatable, but at the same time random; if the opposing rogue opens on you, your chances of winning go down to around 20-30 percent, and with half of the rogues wearing goggles or being human / night elf, getting openers can be difficult. Like I said, we’ve had a difficult start (we were doing well until tanking 250 points to warrior / druid, rogue druid and dk / druid pretty much consecutively) but with some work hopefully we will do better than our current terrible record indicates.

In terms of threes, when I have some time I’m probably going to be running PMR. Yes, it may be unoriginal, but at the moment I just don’t see another rogue comp that’s as effective. I really don’t want to play a cleave setup (anything with double melee) as I find it to be kind of mindless. If I were to play with a lock, then maybe shaman lock rogue, but (I’m sure this is true for everyone) you prefer to play with people you know.

Ultimately, I don’t know how competitive I’ll be this season. I’d really like a first place title, but with rogues being incredibly weak in 5s and sticking with a lackluster mage / rogue comp in 2s, I’m probably going to have to find it in a 3s bracket I haven’t yet started this season. At first I was thinking that I may just play more for fun as I’m really not sure what I want to do in game, but this brings me to my next point.

The Grass is always Greener

This passing tournament realm was a pretty big disappointment for me. I started out playing with a few teams. In all honestly, because I couldn’t find a good enough priest to play with Aeias and myself, and had the same problem with the other PMR I was playing with. I then essentially abandoned the people I knew to play with Pooks and Verty, who seemed serious about succeeding. I felt like a complete asshole, essentially wasting the time of the other teams I was playing with for what I felt was my best shot at qualifying.

For whatever reason, things didn’t work out. We played a bit and did decently (I think about 2300) with a mediocre record. Ultimately, we never played together enough to have any kind of synergy, and due to conflicting schedules we didn’t have a chance to play for about a week mid-tourny realm. At this point, without me realizing it initially, I was ditched by pooks without a word, which was obviously the right choice for him as he was able to qualify with sekko and realz. All I managed to achieve this past tournament realm was to insult some friends and waste 20 dollars. I don’t have any hard feelings, but I will say that it was great this past week watching Aeias shit all over Pooks 1v1 in a mirror match on live, where both me and Sekko died.

For me, the biggest problem I’ve had with this game (which is also a big reason I continue to play it) is that I can never reach a level of contentment. I realize that the mmo genre is all about the “horse chasing the apple they’ll never catch”, and that’s great. Gear will never be perfect because there will always be upgrades, there will always be new reputation grinds or honor pieces, and if there wasn’t then people would spend far less time playing and have far less interest.

For me, this concept goes beyond gear and PvE progression (and before I continue, I’m not trying to be melodramatic or conceited here, I know this is a game). Since I started playing this game a lot, I’ve always had goals: try to be the best rogue in my guild, have the best gear, be the best on the server, make the best video that I can make (get the most out of whatever potential there is), not so much for the recognition (I hope people like my vids, etc, but ultimately I’m doing it for my own satisfaction), but more for the challenge and the goal of striving to be the best.

Since arena came out in BC, these goals have had to change. Being the best suddenly meant having the best rating and being part of a great LAN team. So my goals became trying to get a first place title and ultimately getting into the competitive scene. Despite plenty of opportunities for both (Top ten TR finish, 2 second place teams in seasons 2 and 3, other opportunities playing with great players), I feel like I’ve spent a few years now failing at both. Maybe I need to have more dedication or focus, be more aggressive and cut throat in finding people to play with, or come at things with a different attitude in terms of trying to be competitive. Maybe I need to play whatever FOTM comp will get me first place on some weak battlegroup to get a first place title.

Maybe, but to me if I don’t achieve these things at their most difficult; achieve them the way I want to, then I really won’t achieve anything at all. I don’t know if I’ll ever be content with where I am in this game. I don’t know if achieving a first place title and being sponsored will allow me to relax and just enjoy playing. I don’t know if making the video I’ve always wanted to make will stop me from wanting to make a better one. What I do know is that I’m going to keep trying, even if I never succeed, because I can’t just play for fun. Regardless of the frustration, as long as I continue to play this game I’m going to try to be the best on my own terms. If I’m not constantly striving to be the best I can be then I’m wasting my time.

Mage / Rogue vs. Ret / Healer

A lot of mage / rogues complain about ret pally / healer teams but at the moment. Personally I think they are pretty simple, and here’s the strats we use that seem to be effective. Sure, you’ll lose sometimes through the shear damage of ret, but if you cc correctly you can win a large majority of the time. Sap the healer (shaman or priest), allowing your mage to run in and sheep the ret. Now open hard on healer with a ToT shatter, you cheap shot mut etc. Next, your mage’s cc will force pally trinket; blind him to force bubble OR simply vanish after trinket. If you do, have your mage kite to reset the fight. At this point healer has probably blown some defensive cds (pain suppression, natures swiftness). Have your mage get a sheep on the ret once again (sap the healer once again if possible), and open and do the same thing. If the pally has not bubble (you vanished instead of blinding), vanish after bubble. When bubble comes off blind (if its up) or sheep and the game is over (you get a huge free train on healer 2v1 with no peel). With this strat a lot of times the healer will die before you finish the cycle. A lot of times they die in the initial opener.

If the healer is as druid, they will probably be out pre-hotting. Sap ret, have mage come in when hots are about to fall off, mage comes in with nova df on druid, open hard with ToT shatter on ret, you cs mut cb evis, forces bubble. If the pally freedoms your cheap shot, use kidney shot. Dismantle after your stuns are off and also cloak. If the druid trinkets Deep Freeze, the mage should cs immediately, blind if necessary to force bubble, if not save it. If druid doesn’t trinket DF, then have your mage imp cs (4 second silence here) after DF should be enough time to force a bubble. After bubble wears off, do it all over again, same rules apply. If for whatever reason pally doesn’t die and druid doesn’t trinket, then blind the pally and swap druid who should have no hots on himself (hopefully you will have a vanish–> cheapshot), when the pally trinkets blind, –> sheep –> sheep –> sheep = more than enough time to kill a druid. Careful not to die to thorns. There’s a good chance you will die in this last scenario but your mage should have no trouble handling a ret pally with no trinket (they should still have evo up).

With these strats, as I said, you can still just get obliterated by a ret pally and lose.

  1. Really great article man, and I totally agree on the “achieving” part.. have been in very highrated rogue/rogue teams back in TBC, but never managed to achieve what I really wanted, a “brutal” glad or vengeful glad etc. rank.. that’s it about this game indeed, keeps u striving for something;)

    keep it up,

  4. Hmm, you sound exactly like I have felt since I rerolled a priest. I was once inspired by a priest named Zizek – Dragonmaw to become a shadow priest and even after breaking the odds and becoming the #1 2v2 on Vindication as Spriest/UA lock in season 3(melee armor penn buffs)…I still strived to be better. It didn’t make too much sense, but that psychological drive and want to show others that you are the know all be all best at your class keeps you going. (btw I got hacked lol if you were wondering…) If you’re looking for a warlock for 3s though I got glad on my lock in 2s last season, but after the fear nerf I lost interest in playing him. Message me on Xfire: I’m Oabadar.

  5. i am very glad you posted this, i was getting down on myself about 2’s thinking i was doing something wrong, but apparently rogue/mage just isn’t as strong as it was the previous seasons due to certain class changes. also thanks for your input on ret/healer teams… i can’t wait to see if we can win a few ret teams here and there and push for gladiator this season.

    best of luck to you and aeias in 2’s!

  8. Akrios,
    Great post as always. I too like another poster commented had been feeling a bit down lately. Where I am in no way remotely close to your level of play yet ( just over a year into WoW now and very much a noob at 80) I have the same goals as you do. At this point I still lose drastically more matches than I win but with every loss I gain a little knowledge, learn a new skill, or at least gain the opportunity to laugh at myself. Its those little improvements that keep me going. Frustration can be self motivating just as much as it can be discouraging depending on how you look at it. Keep playing, keep making your vids, and keep posting please you have taught us all a lot.

    On a side note, I hope you realize that you guys have built one of the best rogue sites I have ever come across and I have seen a lot of them. Its hard to find a site like this that has a gathering of truly mature players who all seem to have a healthy level of respect for one another and want to help one another out. Thanks for creating it.

  12. i agree ret healer is not too bad for mage rogue, it’s dk resto druid and warrrior druid that give me the biggest problem.

    You can only feint the bladestorm if you are targeting the warrior, so when i’m on the druid i eat a few ticks before i get it off. Is there a focus feint macro that overcomes the target requirement?

  17. I’m an avid follower of the eviscerate arena videos and as a rogue in rogue/mage I have also been feeling this same sense of frustration. In fact, I think I’ve rage-quit and disbanded my 2s team about 4 times already in this season. Trying to come up with a way to do more damage and put more pressure on the opposing teams sometimes just makes me feel like finding a priest/lock/retadin; but because I <33 my mage (no homo) I can’t bring myself to do it permanently although I was fooling around with a paladin in 2s, sure hope my mage doesn’t ask for a divorce after this infidelity.
    Retadin/healer had been giving us a lot of shit and can’t wait to try and put these strats into action.

    Make moare videos so I can see strats for all the teams!!!

    Thanks Akrioss for influencing the greater part of my playstyle, keep up the good work.

I will admit I still fail in arenas, but that’s something I will be working on. 26. This article kinda reminds me of how im feeling right now in my situation with pvping. After taking a hefty break from arena (hit Gladiator in season 3, went 41-0 in Season 4 in 2v2 with a Disc priest then just plain stopped doing Arena after that, sadly that 2v2 only got me Duelist.

    Trying to get back into arena now is such a pain, ive done like 15 games with a Resto druid in my guild, mainly because we are friends, but it is very difficult because all he has is PvE gear and anything that can push one button kills him. I would kinda feel like a dick if I started searching for a new 2s partner :\ But then again I don’t want a random person from trade chat, b/c synergy is a big part of arena.

    But good luck to ya man, keep at it, I really enjoy your videos and articles on here, always a good read

  27. Well there’s no doubt you have the skill to achieve Furious, and with the current state of priest/rogue in 2v2 it is certainly within reach, but i see your dilemma as to where it leaves Aeias. I also see your dilemma with finding a priest who has the right synergy with you and Aeias to achieve your real potential in 3v3.

    There’s no question in my mind that you would get Furious running a FotM comp but as you said, you want to achieve your goals on your own terms.

  29. I have to say, I was wondering myself earlier this week if me and my mage were doing something wrong. We are by no means pro, but we’re decent and its nice to know that we aren’t the only ones that are having trouble with a few certain comps. As to rets sometimes just bursting through with shear force, my mage got completely WTFpwned in literally 3 secs by a ret. It was just plain funny after i realized what just happened, but then a few games later we got them again and did pretty much what you suggested and it worked perfectly.

    Keep up the good work though and keep the vids comin, love every one of them.

  30. Nice article, you made me play mage rogue and i love it even tough i couldn’t get gladiator this season :) , thanks a lot for every post/vid, each of them gives me a little knowledge.

    BTW, I know you may know this already, I’m actually quite sure you do but armory doesnt show it so, you can get few stacks of weapon chains and buy t2 furious OH, then sell it to vendor and do it all over again till you have enough points for your t2 MH. The 2hours countdown to sell the item to vendor stops in arena so you buy it and weapon chain it for like 4hours, then sell it to vendor and do it again, its not much but any dps upgrade is good while waiting for MH isnt it.

  33. Akrioss-

    I often check the Armory of my favorite Rogues (you being the first) to see what your rating is, what kind of gear you’re rocking, etc. and was really surprised to see you in the 2200’s. I thought to myself, “Wow, something must have happened” and realized that not just me, but even the best Rogues in the world have bad days. Running with Priest/Rogue this season, we hit above 2100 last week and dropped 80 points or so after the nerfs. A lot of people tell me that I should find a new Priest (he clicks a few buttons, has never been to this rating before, and people think I can find a better Priest), but I realize that it’s the drive in the person that makes you the best player. I haven’t stopped following you since I came back to WoW after quitting when BC came out (last June) and you’re definitely one of the best Rogues to play this game. A title is a title man. A lot of this game is RNG and luck-based. It’s not your skill, or your partners…just keep playing, you’ve given a lot of people faith and motivation to continue.

    Comment by Lockhart — May 11, 2009 @ 2:31 am

  34. Just right said.. a title is a title..
    I personally made that expierience myself. I’ve spend days and nights farming teams that might have been able to overrun us a few hours bevor season 2 ends.
    The only thing I got for this was quite a lot of stress and a title which I only achieved because I’ve been running a comp which was by far the best at the times (rmp).
    I’m not saying that having a first title is a bad thing or is only to achieve by players willig to nerd for days nonstop.
    But in the end you won’t be that much proud of it because people are showing respect to you not because you’ve been the first in season 2 or whereever but because they see how you are playing the game now.
    I’ve been watching your videos ever since then.. and I can say that you improved a lot.
    The first videos you did were almost only for entertaining to me.. but in the end of tbc and especially since wotlk started you’ve grown to a tactic orientated rogue with quite a decent play style which I consider to be one of the best in the world at the moment.
    And I think thats excactly what people respect you for.. they see how you play!
    If you’re looking for something of what you can say you achieved in this game let me tell you that the respect for your playstile and the success of your videos is far more worth than a stupid first title

  41. Lol Akrios, I think it’s the rogue class in general which makes you thirst to be the best, the aggressive gameplay takes over when I’m playing, be it PVE or PVP.

    I started playing about 6 months ago, got to level 80 and ever since I’ve been watching your vids and trying to find my own playstyle, I wouldn’t enjoy playing unless I was being the best I could. After 4 months i was BIS naxx gear.
    I’m not as familuar with rogue PvP as you are, but i know where you’re coming from and you’ve been a big inspiration to get into PvP, regardless of getting the ratings you want I think you should be happy with the amount of people you inspire with your gameplay. Makes a difference in the rogue community.

  44. Dude, what you are trying to do is reach perfection. However you fail to realise that perfection is not a destination. Its a proces, its the journey. You are already on it and quite frankly you should enjoy it (dont you?). If you dont i suggest you reflect a bit over your life and maybe take a break to realise whether this is something you really want do or not. If it is something you actually want to do, you’ll miss it. I promise you.

    I think you are putting this scenario of you “succeeding” a bit on a pedistal. Do you really want to make this perfect movie? or get that title? Once you get it, the only way from there is down. I know for a fact that doing so has the negative sideeffect of often killing your entire creative way of thinking and your enjoyment of doing whatever you were doing. I’ve had that happen to me at least.

    Anyway, hope this helps. And even though it is the trademark of a true perfectionist, being a little less hard on yourself will sometimes help you enjoy things a bit more.

  45. Divine sacrficie , hand of sacrifice, and well timed judgments of blood and hand of reckoning taunts on mirror images/water elemental is more than enough ways to avoid sheep if you go for the druid. With full hots and pally buffs and druid buffs you cant spellsteal druid, and then pally has a long immunity to sheep/blind from hand of sacrifice followed by divine sacrifice.

  46. Akrioss, you’re the only of the movie maker rogues that I believe really has the quality of play to potentially move up to the professional level with a bit more practice and discipline. Unmercy, Mewbert, and Neil for example don’t have enough discipline with their play style and make too many extraordinary mistakes that cause them games time after time.

    Rogue vs Rogue in 3v3 is all about cool down management and mistake making. Flashy movie making rogues who care about looks rather than results are going to continue to think rogue duels are in the very slightest a representation of arena and continue to make stupid mistakes which yield bad results. You have to be true to yourself, analyze your own play, and consider how you could improve it.

    If you want to play pro you have to play with good players which you are more than capable of finding, but you also have to learn to control you cool down management better. 2v2 is the worst bracket because it teaches you that Cd spamming and flashy BS is good, but in the only tournament bracket, 3v3, it is the opposite. Rogues are like a backbone to PMR. If your rogue can spam CDs you can get 2300, but if your rogue can’t manage himself extremely well you’ll never beat the top teams out there.

    Enforcer Pookz and Realz do well because they are all extremely good players, have amazing synergy, and play fantastic. But I can tell you, enforcer is the FIRST rogue since Emolol to come onto the professional scene and actually manage himself very well.

    If you want to go pro, I would start with dropping the movie making for a short while and playing 3v3 and only 3v3 with the best Priest and Mage you can find. Don’t stop until you get #1 on Rampage, and once you do don’t stop queueing. Rating on live means nothing, people don’t get sponsorships anymore off of rating on live. You get it off of TR performance and Lan performance.

    If you use any mods, now is the time to lose them if you’re serious.

    Best of Luck

  47. *ATTENTION**ATTENTION* incoming nerf to rogues who is running around with stealth detection googles.
    “We recently made some changes to items that grant stealth detection. We felt these items provided a necessary advantage in competitive PVP and forced players to use lower level equipment even when more powerful items were available to them.

    This item can no longer be used in the Arena:

    * Ultra-Spectropic Detection Goggles

    We have removed stealth detection from the following items:

    * All epic engineering goggles

    We have reduced the stealth detection of the following items:

    * Catseye Ultra Goggles
    * Blood Guard’s Dragonhide Gauntlets
    * Marshal’s Dragonhide Gauntlets
    * Knight-Lieutenant’s Dragonhide Gloves
    * General’s Dragonhide Gloves
    * Bloodvine Lens
    * Knight-Lieutenant’s Dragonhide Grips
    * Blood Guard’s Dragonhide Grips
    * The Night Watchman

    All of these changes are already active and the tooltips will be updated with the next minor patch.”

  48. I know this might sound a bit strange but after wrath i feel like rogue movies have been more about epic moments and creative tricks. After watching Neilyo 14.5 i thought to myself that the class rogue had been fully discovered . But it didnt take long before i saw how wrong i actually was. Im trying to keep up with all these changes in rogue play style. Its become alot faster after wrath and there are occations were you have to preform something close to impossible. Like in a mirror rogue duel when you are getting opened on, from my POV there are only two ways of winning a duel with a decent rogue having opener on you, both are about avoiding blind. Either you will have to vanish his blind which i first thought was the only way when fighting a good rogue. Now it seems there are other ways of winning (gouge a trinket, sap vanish ect.).

    Point is that i agree with Akrios that the game continues adding new content and discoveries. Blizzard alone aint the reason why the game continues being never ending but also (atleast in my eyes as a PvP´er) the players that constantly adds new strats/tricks you name it. Akrios, you are one of those players who keep me playing this game, i dont know if that is suppose to be an insult or a thanks, however i do still enjoy it. Ty for ur great movies aswell, i feel in love ^^

  53. Hey Akrios :) ,
    firstly want to thank you for the vids and info. They been a great help to get my rogue into a proper pvp setup. Why I leave a message? I train ninjutsu in real life, and in pvp I sometimes feel that the ninpo philoshopy can be applied to it. You, same as I do, get frustrated. My gear isnt perfect ingame and its causing me a shitload of difficulty in 2v2. But what I learned in my real life training that I also apply to my ingame attitude, is that its impossible to be “The best”. But it is not impossible to be “The best you can be”. You should keep going at it, but don’t get angry with yourself =P, you are doing good~ It remains a game after all ;) .

    Regards,

    Aron
