Elitist Jerks 3.1 Mutilate Guide

posted by Akrios on April 30th, 2009

You can view the original post on the EJ forums here. Thanks to Ikaruga for making such a great, detailed guide.

Mutilate Raiding 3.1

Specs:

Mutilate
51/13/7 (Includes Glyphs)
This is the standard Mutilate build, but things vary based on your current stats and current raid instance.

Murder vs Quick Recovery vs Fleet Footed

these are the three talents you can choose between, currently in naxxramas, everything is undead except for Faerlina and Maexxna.
which makes Murder pretty much obsolete as a talent there.

If you are expertise capped, Fleet Footed should be your choice for naxxramas, if you arent Quick Recovery is
a good choice.

Now when you enter Ulduar, The Eye of Eternity or The Obsidian Sanctum, Murder will be your choice regardless to your current stats.
Which makes 51/13/7 (Includes glyphs) The ideal choice.

Poison choices:

If you are interested in how the new Poison mechanics work in 3.1 check Voij’s excellent thread on the
subject Here.

You will want to run with Instant Poison IX on your mainhand.
and Deadly Poison IX on your offhand.

The reason you keep Instant Poison on your mainhand, is because you have a chance at proccing poisons
when using mutilate and finishers.

An important note: Your Mutilate poison requirements can be fulfilled by other rogues and hunters Serpent Sting, which is why you do not need to wait for a DP application before using another mutilate.

Rotation:

Cut to the Chase is the biggest change to Mutilate’s rotation considering how it worked in TBC.
Now you can refresh Slice and Dice with Eviscerate or Envenom.

There is no static rotation for mutilate, its very dynamic and requires you to actively watch for timers on your debuffs, and buffs alike. Get a tracking addon, its a lot more efficient than constantly looking for your timers in between tons of other buffs and debuffs.

Generally you’ll start off Slice and Dice and Hunger for Blood however you like, but make sure you have SnD running as a 5 pointer before you go for the list below, using a one point Slice and Dice and following it with a one point Envenom does in fact refresh Slice and Dice to its 5 point potential.

A few of tracking addons:
Need to know on WowInterface
Rogue Power Bars on Curse
Ice-Hud on Curse
Event Horizon on WowInterface

Ice-hud is the one I personally use, due to being heavily configurable.

Priority list;

Mutilate up to 4+ combo points

If Hunger for Blood is dropping below 5 seconds, refresh it.

If Rupture is still up, use Envenom, if deadly poison is not stacked to the same amount as your combo
points, pool your energy and use it at the last possible moment, preferably right after a
Deadly Poison tick to maximize its effect.

Always give Hunger for Blood priority on being refreshed over slice n dice.
Always give Slice and Dice priority on being refreshed over rupture.

if you have the chance, pool your energy before letting that ability off to let Slice and Dice
or Hunger for Blood
maximize its potential and to fit in
two mutilates during the envenom buff to increase poison procs.

Important note: All special attacks including Finishers can be dodged if you
are not expertise capped, this can seriously mess up rotations if unlucky, if
for an example you decide to pool energy before using envenom, and using it
with 2-3 seconds remaining on Slice n dice, this can get dodged,
and you might not notice until its too late, and server lag prevents you from re’using it again,
making your slice n dice drop, and resetting your rotation.

Personally I’ve had 3 envenom’s dodged in a row, truly shows the value of expertise.

Stats:

First for a quick explanation of this system:
EP is short for Equivalence Point, this means that the power of one stat, is used to
determine how valuable the others are in comparison, like in this table for instance,
agilty is the base, and weighed as 2.

Lets compare Icewalker and Superior Agility on boots, assuming you are under the poison hit cap,
but above the special hit cap.

Icewalker
12 hit rating = 12*2.2 = 26,4 EP
12 crit rating = 12*1.6 = 19,2 EP
26,4 + 19,2 = 45,6 EP

Even above the poison hit cap, Icewalker lands as 36 EP.

Superior Agility
16 agility = 16*2.0 = 32 EP

Icewalker is obviously superior to Superior Agility.

These EP stats vary based on your current gear, but this is a rather reliable quick-list.

Note that these values assumes full raidbuffs.

AP: 1
Agi: 1.94
Crit: 1.54
Exp: 1.52
Haste: 1.46
ArPen: 1.83

Below the specials hit cap hit is worth 1.92
Below the poisons hit cap hit is worth 1.68
above both caps hit is worth 1.28

If you want to determine accurate EP values for your gear,
you can do it with the following spreadsheets:

The RogueCraft Spreadsheet
RogueCraft AEP

Important note: on the subject of 2 ap vs 1 agility, 2 ap is slightly better, but its very close.

Hit Table
This all assumes 5/5 Precision.

With no added buffs or debuffs:
Specials: 99
Poisons: 315
White: 722

With either Imp FF or Misery:
Specials: 99
Poisons: 237
White: 722

With either Imp FF or Misery and Heroic Presence:
Specials: 66
Poisons: 210
White: 689

with only Heroic Presence:
Specials: 66
Poisons: 288
White: 689

Expertise:

The value of expertise seems to elude some people, to make it simple;
in pve, raidbosses have a chance to dodge your attacks even though you stand behind them, with expertise, you can negate this.

Bosses have a 6.25% – 6.50% chance to dodge your attacks, this goes for all main attacks (mutilate I.E,)  all finishers and white damage.

Each point of expertise gives you a 0.25% reduction on being dodged.

with no racials,
you will need 214 expertise rating from gear, or 26 expertise points.

with no racials, but 2/2 Weapon Expertise:
you will need 132 expertise rating from gear, or 16 expertise points.

With the human racial wielding either swords or fists, and specced into Weapon Expertise:
you will need 107 expertise rating from gear, or 13 expertise points.

simply put, no matter what racials or talents you are using, if you read 26/26 expertise in your character tab, you are capped.

The attack table, hit vs crit vs expertise vs glancing blows
Two roll system vs single roll system

first for a few simple facts:

All bosses reduce your crit by 4.8%, this is 3% from the difference in your weapon skill vs bosses defense level, and 0.6% per level difference, boss level mobs are always counted as 3 levels above you.

Yellow attacks and white auto-attacks do not work the same when it comes to the attack table. Yellow attacks use a so called two-roll system and white auto attacks however use a one-roll system. Simply put: the crit cap for specials is not affected by avoidances like dodge, parry, miss, glancing blows, etc Therefore:

the crit cap for specials is 104.8% at its highest.

Since white auto-attacks are single roll, the crit cap for them would be affected by avoidances. Therefore, you could calculate the crit cap by subtracting your combined avoidance chance (miss + dodge + parry + glance + block) from 104.8%. As long as you are behind the mob, parry and block are 0%. Glance is always 24%. Therefore:

the crit cap on white attacks is 80.08% at its highest.

Enchants:

Weapon:
Enchant Weapon – Berserking
Helm:
Arcanum of Torment
Shoulders:
Greater Inscription of the Axe
Master’s Inscription of the Axe - Inscription only -
Chest:
Enchant Chest – Powerful Stats
Cloak:
Enchant Cloak – Major Agility
Swordguard Embroidery - Tailoring only -
Bracers:
Enchant Bracers – Greater Assault
Fur Lining – Attack Power – Leatherworking only -
Gloves:
Enchant Gloves – Crusher
Hyperspeed Accelerators – Engineering only -
Legs:
Icescale Leg Armor
Boots:
Enchant Boots – Icewalker
Belt:
Eternal Belt Buckle
Rings:
Enchant Ring – Assault – Enchanting only -

Gemming:

Metagem: Relentless Earthsiege Diamond

Now looking at the EP values of Hit and Expertise,

If you have a socketbonus, and are wondering whether to gem to get it or not,
you can use your EP values to determine if its worth placing a purple/orange/green gem or not.

If you are lucky enough to be a Jewelcrafter you can use the epic gems to fit any color to attain its socketbonus,
and to fill out your metagem requirement without sacrificing stats by using lesser gems.

Below the special and poison hit cap, you’ll want to gem one of the following:

Rigid Autumn’s Glow +16 Hit Rating (Yellow)

Pristine Monarch Topaz +16 Attack Power and +8 Hit Rating (Orange)
Glinting Monarch Topaz +8 Agility and +8 Hit Rating (Orange)
Accurate Monarch Topaz +8 Expertise Rating and +8 Hit Rating (Orange)

Vivid Forest Emerald +8 Hit Rating and +12 Stamina (Green)

Above the special hit cap, you’ll want to gem one of the following:

Rigid Autumn’s Glow +16 Hit Rating (Yellow)

Pristine Monarch Topaz +16 Attack Power and +8 Hit Rating (Orange)
Glinting Monarch Topaz +8 Agility and +8 Hit Rating (Orange)
Accurate Monarch Topaz +8 Expertise Rating and +8 Hit Rating (Orange)

Vivid Forest Emerald +8 Hit Rating and +12 Stamina (Green)

Above the special and poison hit cap, you’ll want to gem one of the following:

Delicate Scarlet Ruby +16 Agility (Red)
Bright Scarlet Ruby +32 Attack Power (Red)
Precise Scarlet Ruby +16 Expertise (Red)

Deadly Monarch Topaz +8 Agility and +8 Critical Strike Rating (Orange)
Wicked Monarch Topaz +16 Attack Power and +8 Critical Strike Rating (Orange)
Stark Monarch Topaz +16 Attack Power and +8 Haste Rating (Orange)
Deft Monarch Topaz +8 Agility and +8 Haste Rating (Orange)

Balanced Twilight Opal +16 Attack Power and +12 Stamina (Purple)
Gurdian’s Twilight Opal +8 Expertise Rating and +12 Stamina (Purple)
Shifting Twilight Opal +8 Agility and +12 Stamina (Purple)

Now when it comes to deciding whether to gem the expertise, agility or attack power versions of each gem,
you’ll need to spreadsheet your gear to get an exact result, they are all very close on dps.

Glyphs:

This is fairly simple, there are three mandatory glyphs for Mutilate raiding.
Glyph of Hunger for Blood
Glyph of Mutilate
Glyph of Rupture

There is another additional one, but it requires additional testing before its value can be determined.
Glyph of Tricks of the Trade

On Minor Glyphs, its completely up to you.

Spreadsheets and how to use them:

Buffs Beneficial to the Rogue:
Lets get a nice overview of what others can buff us with in a raid setting.
Note that if two or more abilities provide the same buff they do not stack.
I’m skipping Hunter Pet buffs and debuffs for this and the next part.

Also note that the spellpower percantage to crit and damage do infact buff the rogues poison damage,
Envenom however does not take the benefit from the spellcrit buff and debuff.

Especially on the charts, before i was struggling to top meters, but now im doing it pretty easily. Can’t wait to get the BIS Mut weapons and see even more pro dps :D

  10. Great job Akrios, this will really help both myself and other people who know that mut still works. However, on the human racial for expertise, it’s swords and MACES, not swords and fist weapons.

Also, any chance there might be a combat version of this coming out?

  12. so i was curious, i understand that berserking is hands down the best chant for a melee wep. but, i would like to know what the rogue-rogue community thinks of executioner and its validity in a raid, it seems that it would be a very practical chant for the short on cash and looks like it may even better than the mongoose alternative. any insight?

  13. Hi Akrios!
    Have a question in specc,
are “Master Poisoner” realy better then “Turn the tables”
in your specc you have “master poisoner” and have tried them both but cant realy say any diffrent, but ofc i will maximize,
thx for guides and tips, helping much.

  14. Question:

It says Instant Poison still goes on main hand, but does that mean you still keep the faster weapon on main hand too? Seems odd that with poisons based on proc/minute that you still consider the IP procs from finishers, I guess I still don’t understand the new poison system clearly.

  20. Hey there really nice guide, knew the rotation from before patch. However the spreadshet linket was rly nice and was able to improve my dps with 500 or so from optimizing my gear.
I must admit u could add when to use vanish and coldblod.
Cold blod kinda says itself use on envenom when u your trinkets and enchants procs.
Vanish use when u have stored almost 100 energy. I save then refresh rupture and SnD and save agian. Then ill use vanish with give me the opportunity to use garrote and descrease energy cost på 10 for 6sec.

  21. Its all crazy i TOP meters with Slow MH/DP and Fast OH/IP, 51/13/7, glyphed Mut, HfB, and FoK…expertise is overated, so play with the numbers imo. Dachsall’s Bite/Golem Shard, t7.5 4p. and only one t 8.5 (legs) Kil’ Jaeden look me up :)

  22. Great post!

The only problems I’m having is the new 25 Ulduar gear seems to have little hit on it. I’m trying to balance my stats but cant seem to get 315 hit AND 26 exp. The new gear has great stats on it and (especially crit). I can get upwards to 38% crit unbuffed but my hit is 274 and exp is 15 ><. However i can reach these required caps trough replacing some of the new gear (i.e. Flamewalker Boots or Mechanist Bindings) over older BIS items with hit or exp. on them.

IF anyone can lay some knowledge on me it would be much appreciated =D

  24. Hi, im new to the page and ive been trying out both mutilate and combat specc, and in my humble opinion combat works a bit better, with the new poison procc system and with 18/51/2 build im at the top 3 dps if not first at almost every fight, using wound poison on both weaps cause with the haste buff combat has now on lightning reflexes, plus WP proccs at about 94% of the times with slower weaps it really does much more dmg than instant. Well just an opinion if u would like to look it up, just saying u might wanna give it a try. Great site btw keep it up love the pvp videos.

  26. Hey im new to the site, and found this to be really helpful; I’ve not been 80 for very long, and can only play on the weekends, and so im not completely epic’d out atm, im still using crappy helm neck shoulders chest and bracers, while the rest of my gear is pretty good (t8 gloves, legs nearly as good as val) and im using Twilights Mist MH / Webbed Death OH , and after reading about the rotation i’d just like to make sure i have it right, so that i can get above my usual 2.7k dps… Stealth > Garrote > Hunger for Blood > Mutilate > (4-5 combo pts) Slice and Dice > Arcane Torrent > Mutilate > (4-5 combo pts) Rupture > Mutilate while keeping everything up, please lmk if that’s correct, it’d really help lol, also i guess im kinda of confused about using instant on MH, i was told by my friend that i should use a slow MH (my Twilights Mist) and a fast OH (Webbed Death) and then use Deadly on MH and Instant on OH, lmk if that’s correct or not, :) thanks again

  27. Hey. Found this quite usefull. Optimized my dps and made a huge difference. Thanks for the guide.

    best regards Ayire of Ahn’Qiraj

    Comment by Ayire — May 13, 2009 @ 2:24 pm

  28. Rather, you’ll want a faster weapon in offhand with deadly poison there – I speak from experience when saying that applying deadly poison with 1×1,8 daggers is a slag.
As far as IP goes – basically, weapon speed doesn’t matter for it anymore. The advantage of putting IP in mainhand, though, is that you basically get a ‘free’ extra application of it whenever you use a yellow attack. Look at it like this; Mainhand=yellow+white attacks, offhand=white attacks. Did that explain it?

    Comment by Elynndriel — May 18, 2009 @ 11:35 pm

  29. Technically speaking yes (: it’s even better for combat (since mutilate rogues rely more on poisons, which aren’t mitigated by armour). I myself am very suspicious of it too if I’m honest.

    Comment by Elynndriel — May 18, 2009 @ 11:36 pm

  30. Well you might want to use Master Poisoner if there’s not a paladin with Heart of the Crusader (http://www.wowhead.com/?spell=20337) or an elemental shaman (Totem of Wrath). Else, I do believe TtT is better, because all you gain from Master Poisoner is higher DP apply chance on envenom. Which simply isn’t worth it, IMO. If it were IP instead of DP, I’d say yes.

    Comment by Elynndriel — May 18, 2009 @ 11:39 pm

  31. The points of criticism; I saw you fully lacking Precision – and I’m disinclined to believe you have the ~475 hit rating to remain at the poison hit cap to make up for the loss of this talent. I’m afraid I can’t see your gear, you’re just wearing a shirt, tabard and dagger. Cyber, eh? ;p
Bottom line is that even if you chose for Serrated Blades, you’ll want to keep the hit rating to remain at the poison hit cap, at least. If you don’t have this, then you’re better off with the standard EJ mutilate spec (51/13/7).
If you however can get ~411 hit rating, ish, then you could take this spec but at least put those points in Imp. SnD in Precision so you remain at poison hit cap. Also Imp. SnD isn’t worth it, since you lose envenom damage, and moreover, the envenom buff which allows more IP procs, thus more IP damage (:
Also I made a lost a little lower on this page about Master Poisoner vs. Turn the Tables. IMO, the latter is better if you have a paladin with Heart of the Crusader or a shaman with Totem of Wrath (They supply the same buff, and it doesn’t stack)

    Comment by Elynndriel — May 18, 2009 @ 11:44 pm

  32. I work with 15 Exp, and I don’t feel getting more is really necessary. Remember, as EJ says, there are no magic numbers. Also your hit rating should be enough for poison hit cap with either a Goat in the raid or Imp Faerie Fire/Misery. Or both.
I do know what you mean though. I’m at 332 hit with my current gear – no Ulduar items except for Daschal’s Bite, and I find replacing my gear a slag due to having to drop that hit rating.

    Comment by Elynndriel — May 18, 2009 @ 11:48 pm

  33. Weapon choices are right, but my own cycle’s a bit different;

Garrotte->HfB->Slice and Dice->Mutilate (if you get a Ruthlessness proc and mutilate crits, you’ll be at 4 CP again)->Envenom to renew SnD regardless of CP->Mutilate to 4/5 CP->Rupture.
THen start mutilating to keep up SnD and Rupture as much as possible. If HfB, Rupture and SnD have a long duration, mutilate to 4/5 CP and when your energy caps, envenom. You can even do envenom when rupture is at say 2 seconds left, because with one mutilate (crit) and Ruthlessness, you’ll be at 4 CP in a second again and can renew Rupture in time. If Ruthlessness doesn’t proc, you’ll have to mutilate twice, which has the upside of often resulting in a 5CP rupture (considering your crit, mutilate should at least crit once every hit you do with it) which ups the Rupture damage and makes up for the brief loss in downtime :)
