Why use PvE gear in PvP?

posted by Akrios on March 23rd, 2009

One of the questions I’m most frequently asked is “do you really PvP in that gear?” Normally in arena, I use around 150-200 resil. In fact, the only time I think that resilience is worthwhile is when you’re playing an outlast setup (say, rogue paladin or rogue shaman in 2v2) or when you intend to tank another rogue (for example, in rmp mirror match).

The strength of the rogue class is when it is played aggressively. If a fight goes longer than your set of cooldowns, your chances of winning abruptly decrease. RMP, rogue mage in 2s, or any offensive arena team is most effective when the fight lasts shorter than a minute. If it goes longer, it begs the question “why use a rogue instead of a hunter for MS effect?” For rmp, the same can be said about using a mage instead of a DK or warlock, or even a priest over a paladin or shaman.

Obviously, many situations call for resilience, and it’s a good idea to have such a set ready for use. I just feel that PvE gear is far better for the majority of arena situations.

Look at what you really get from pvp gear in comparison to pve gear. Some stamina (not a sizeable amount) and crit and resilience for a lot of ap, hit, and haste. You end up having to gem your pvp gear with hit just to reach cap, so you lose even more stats than it would appear at first. In general what you are trading for is  damage for the survivability resilience brings. Without a defensive healer, resilience brings very lackluster surviability, and is far worse point for point than stamina. With a healer, resilience brings you enough survivability to barely live in a situation where you would almost die.

I’m not saying that my way is the only right way, I see a lot of rogues succeeding with pvp gear. That being said, this is my opinion on the subject. Ideally, rogue pvp gear would provide us with enough damage to do our job while giving us the defensive stats to survive, but unfortunately that seems to be reserved for other classes (see hunters and dks).

  3. Akrios,

I am playing rogue druid atm because i still think it has potential we have reached 2k which is pretty tough on our bg group cause everyone plays pally dk (what a suprise). So i use full pvp gear with dual SR’s. Do you think it would be best for me to play in my PvE gear? Btw my PvE gear is all alomst BIS.

    Comment by Boxtrik — March 23, 2009 @ 2:27 pm

  4. Noxan: seems you’re playing 1 “tank” rogue and 1 offensive rogue, to me it’s obvious the tanking rogue should be in pvp gear, and you could stick with as much dps gear as necessary. Could be scary if you play the same team over and over, and they get used to your tactics though.

I have a question for Akrios too though; you’re saying you usually are at 150-200 res. I guess you use the pvp-trinket, but what’s the point of switching out other pve-pieces for a little more res when you’re still gonna be low? What other pvp-pieces do you use, and for what reason? Thanks :)

    Comment by Sulf — March 23, 2009 @ 3:35 pm

  5. I like how he is saying he uses 150-200 resil but in fact on his armory he is using 637 resil. And yet he is still playing a double dps setup. Contradicting your own post a little don’t you think Akiros? I think your a great rogue but this post doesn’t really make sense because you are playing with full deadly now.

  10. same reason i use pve gear, not anywhere near enough damage as pvp.i have more faith in myself to survive than some gear. pvp is better just like you described, for killing someone in a minute or less. hopefully (soon) they will make pvp gear actually better for rogues than pve (in pvp that is). the only pvp gear i wear is the cloak and boots and the gloves(enchanted with nitro boosts, hand mounted pyro rockets, and the subtlety agil enchant) because in pve those are pretty bad.

  12. hello Akrios,

Which gear (pvp or pve) would be better for Battlegrounds?

    Comment by Shadowstryke — March 23, 2009 @ 7:17 pm

  13. When I roll into Arena I am rocking the Deadly Legs, Hateful Belt, Gloves, Trinket and Helm. I am relatively new to Arena/PvP in general, so WotLK Arena is the only one I know, and trust me…I get a LOT of shit for rocking the gear that I am atm, but I do decent in PvP, with like 471 Res, however, when your crit rating drops to 25% from 30%…some things need to change.

Perhaps Akrios is correct in observing that overall, rogues are fragile, sometimes surviving that ONE crit or that ONE tick makes a difference, however, rogues die ALOT. I speak for myself and the others that I have knocked out, we are a true glass cannon class imo, and no amount of PvP gear can shield us from being solo’d by a DK’s weapon, or getting the assbeating from a Pally/DK team when it is T7.5 v PvP gear. It helps, but no enough to really create a NOTICEABLE difference imo.

  14. Im playin Arena with PvE Gear. Main Problem istn the Damage I do, its the damage I take. If I see a Pala, Im trying to lock him down and bring him to pop his bubble, then vanish. But after the Bubble, there comes the Trinket, Hammer of Justice, 3 Hits, Im dead. I dont kno wtf Blizz is doin but it sucks.

oh btw, as i was trying some 2s with a holy pally in pve gear, i did decent amount of dmg. Currently going as 41/5/25.
Was up against a priest and rogue. i was down to 3% rly quick but pally Bop me. So i would say that pve gear does alot of dmg but also takes alot of dmg. Its quite a risk in arenas

  27. Rogue Mage teams are frickin sick right now in Arena imo, they are not as volatile as the Pally/DK teams that EVERYONE and their damn mothers have seen…

Rogue Mage is big because of the amount of explosive confusion and sheer fire power that the two (Quote from Akrios earlier posts) “Glass cannon classes” can put out. If you watch Arena Vol. 3 and 4, you can see just a fraction of the amount of confusion a rogue mage team can pull off.

Granted your results are most likely not going to be seen exactly like Akrios and Aries team “Sean Connery” (When they were still active! =( ) However, try it out Impailor, find yourself a decent mage and do your homework. If you play your cards right, you should have yourself a shot at just about EVERY team, you are not above teams, but you have a chance against everyone.

  30. Ty so much for bringing this up, this helps a lot, ive been experimenting with mixing pve gear and finding the right amount of resil, this is heartening as im sooner to get T8 gear then the new S6 with the new patch. and pvp gear is ugly lol

and stop asking for his UI and server and search the site, all that info is there :)

  31. Sdance=pvp gear with a MH 1.8/ OF 1.5 or less
    mut=pve gear

    that is my personal opinion.

  32. if the pally trinkets you should be sure to know he will be hammering to get your burst off him so cloak. Or, if he is running towards you will you lock down the dps you should cloak.

    so to sum it up

running toward you = going to hammer so cloak
trinketing with like 50% hp = hammer to get rid of your pressure so cloak

sorry for the bad english if there is any. :)

    Comment by scizok — March 24, 2009 @ 6:19 pm

  33. instead of serrated blades he picked imp ambush and ghostly strike
As mut i would think these 2 talents are not worth them.
because you will mostly never use ghostly strike in arena. you will be wanted to pure cc and burst the target down a bit not get 15% dodge which with all the dks out there wont help at all.
Imp ambush is also farly bad for 41/5/25 because that is a move you will use once and not alot. Maybe to get some burst on like a priest or to do some damage to a mage then vanish(like akrioss does in alot of his arena videos)
so no you shouldn’t go with Imp Ambush
serrated blades would be your best pick for the armor reduce to throught in some extra burst into your dmg.

sorry if this doesn’t help or make sense.

  35. did anyone else see the season 6 gear, tier 7 does more damage than that, its just pitiful. I realize that pvp gear is about surviving but seriously, if arena gear is going to be put into the game that bad, then why would any rogue choose it unless they absolutely have to?

  37. The lack of Resilience is the reason why. However, despite having 437 resilience, (which my Live toon has, and my Arena rogue has somewhere in the 500s) that damage that rogues take are considerable STILL.

The lack of heavy armor, lack of health and the amount of focus fire we receive is the main reason we do not survive long when we get ganged up on. However, with a good mix of PvE and PvP gear, we gain both the advantages of res and the sick burst damage seen in PvE, imo.

  38. Akrios/Nition
I just read some articles on WoWInsider and Gameriot stating that the Arena participation is down 65% this season compared to last. Players are blaming it on anything from DKs, player imbalance, to the newer higher requirements on PVP arena gear. I feel the imbalance being the major factor but it seems the new rating requirements certainly don’t help. Also it is more difficult to have as many teams this season which also may be a factor. Anyway I was curious as to what your take on the current decline is?

Also thanks keeping this site up and running I love it

  43. well personally I enjoy arena lot less right now. In tbc, i could survive long enough to be slower and more secure with cds. Now you’re rewarded for blowing cds quickly. It’s no fun to play against classes that can kill you in a matter of 3 seconds and you have no rebuttle, I’m sure a lot of people feel the same way.

Up until watching him on TR, I hadn’t seen many rogues take the chances he has in duels/games, granted I played him a few times on Bloodlust and wasn’t as amazed with his skill, but it was early in the season and I think there was a gear imbalance in my favor.

  46. I am playing rogue / mage. I am wearing like 560 ressi. I got some more pve parts, but I rather use 4 parts to get the setbonus. 130 energy is awsome imo. What I mean is, with 130 energy you can cheapshot-mutilate-kidneyshot-mutilate. insed of cs,muti, kidny *wait* . Not for 10 energy is so much, but it is an quicker mutilate for the burst you need in rogue mage.

    Comment by Bendickson — March 25, 2009 @ 5:56 pm

  50. My view on the subject is your resilience should scale inversely with your healer’s ability (or lack thereof) to keep you up. So with a holy pally try running with 5-600 res, see how you do, of course when running with another ‘glass cannon’ like a mage, throw on your damage gear.

    Comment by Bendickson — March 25, 2009 @ 6:00 pm

  51. where resil is king…maybe…you know a good mage can win a rogue without any resil, but rogue can`t.
maybe damage is more worth than resil..i mean,of course, keep balance between them is necessary.

you need more burst to end the match fast. If you don’t then your dead.

  58. 99% of the Rogues in the world aren’t even near the calibur of Akrioss. This is where there’s a huge difference between being confident that you can burst someone down as quick as possible and get away clean if things go sour with PVE gear, as oppose to sitting out in the open for 25 seconds trying desperately to drop an opponent in Deadly. Most of it really does have to do with your knowledge of the classes in the game, your ability to play and play intelligently, and having a lot of trust in your 2’s partner.

    Comment by Lockhart — March 27, 2009 @ 8:23 am

  59. Would this apply to both the 2v2 and 3v3 brackets? I would assume so. I am running Rogue/Mage 2v2 and Rogue/Mage/Paladin for my 3v3. I kinda swap gear sets every few games but I can’t really see much survivability increase from pve – pvp. I’m still fairly undergeared but if I go from PvE gear to PvE gear(Not including trinket, given) I lose about 600 ap, 5% crit chance, and gain 2500 health(20164 total), 470 resil, and the 4pc Glad bonus(+10 energy, so 130 total.)

    Comment by Kalara — March 27, 2009 @ 7:16 pm

  60. Hey, I wanted to ask you, have you seen Buddhists guide to rogue pvp? He does a rundown of 1v1 tactics against each class and it has really helped me a lot. I still have trouble with dks, pallys and some hunters. What do you think of Buddhists guide, and what advice do you have for those classes?

Another question, I noticed youre in your pvp gear on your armory with 551 resil, but youre mutilate spec. Im just curious what kind of combo youre runnin that with and for what purpose. Maybe the armory just hasnt updated or somethin, but im interested what your current gear strat is.

Today I tried playing a DK at level 65. I made a /castrandom with all damage abilities in and totally owned face. It actually saddened me as I did not enjoy it whatsoever, and quickly went back to my rogue.
At any rate, what do you do against a pala/DK team (usually)? My team finds them too volatile yet with way too much survival to actually have a decent shot.

Lately we’ve been killing the pet, then the paladin, then the DK, but we only seem to succeed in about 1/5 matches versus that setup. Anything you can recommend from your experience with them so far?

    Again, cheers!

I think the same with author… PvE gear is far better for rogue… PvP gear is useless coz of low stats and resilience… resilience. its crap for rogue imo.

    Comment by Pb164 — April 2, 2009 @ 1:50 am

  71. It’s not crap, but point-for-point PvE gear just does much more at the moment.
We’re very squishy, and nerfing our damage a lot for a very little bit more survival won’t help, Because then we’ll just lose due to a lack of burst.

I mean, consider this. A paladin. Plate, and you need to make him pop his bubble as quickly as possible as a burst team such as RM. You just won’t ever make him do that in PvP gear unless you’ve had some luck from the gods – which, as you won’t have most of the time, would of course make your struggle pointless and render you the loser.

  73. well he doesnt just pull videos out of his ass every week, hes workin on one now, but i agree, it has been a couple weeks since a post. I wonder what ya think of the T8 gear, seems similar to the T7 for pve, but the bonuses are shitty for pvp, will you still wear full T7 in arena or move up?

  74. Why shitty ? If Rupture can crit, it could be nice against some Warriors which are nrly dead ^^

  75. The rupture bonus is ok, but im primarily speaking of the energy bonus from DP ticks, i use WP and MNP in arena, so this does nothing for me. I much prefer 5% less energy cost to all combo moves. This seems like Blizz is tryin to discourage us from usin tier gear in pvp. Thoughts?

  76. If you had to choose the optimal gear for a pvp set including all gear currently in the game what would you choose? What would you choose if you were an engineer?

  77. I myself would take 4/5 T 7.5 and the weakness spectralizers for the stealth detection, which you want as much of as possible, then I would take all Deadly offset pieces, the AP battlemaster trinket, Bandit’s Insignia from 25 Naxx, Ring of Invincibility, Drape of the Deadly Foe, and of course 2 Sinister Revenges. And gem for about 30% crit, at least 5% hit, and throw the rest in AP. There ya go, thats my whish list. :)

  78. LMAO

    “…warrior’s which are nearly dead.”

    Isn’t it nice?

  79. ye pvp gear makes less dmg harder to kill you (resi)pve gear huge dmg alows faster kills and shorter games but less survival u died in ur last movie against the other rogues and almost that warrior so ya both has negative sides

  81. hey im 80 rogue currently doing arena with a lock, some of u may think its an apropriate partner but we dish out a sh*tload of dps
aside from that i read everywhere about pvp vs pve gear, im currently one piece furious of a set and 4 other furious pieces that do not add to the set, the rest is pve, i have 440 resi, and now that im looking at spending arena points and honor into more furious(dnt have rating for relentless yet) i find that i loose all my ap and crit and only gain resilience, most fights dnt last long enough for resi to be usefull even without a healer.

    thoughts?insights?tips?

  84. I’ve about 4 years playing as a Rogue but i’m from Cuba and we can’t enter to Blizzard servers so we have anothers servers (Trinity, MANGOS)so my question it’s … When you have a Warrior/HollyPala in a 2v2 Arena what you can do ’cause de F… warrior kill you in nanoseconds and if the paladin use the Scraed cleansing and the buff is activated there’s no way my poison slow the Warrior and ….. my partner its Dead or worst we are both deads
