im new and confused, what spec would be best for occasional doing both pvp and pve, in like instances or whatever i like to just sit at the back and back stab so im thinkin something like this?
http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/classes/rogue/talents.html?tal=00500300000000000000000000000501500500000000000000000005320032130022121350135201000

My personal build, works amazingly. Openers are intense, very similar too: http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=fhefoxMoiroczZ0xZebfbh0db

Quick question hoping it will be answered by Akrios himself, what do you think of Glyph of Vigor: http://www.wowhead.com/?item=42971 as far as pvp goes? I’ve been using it and it seems to make life just a little easier when VSing multiples. Just curious to see what you think, or if maybe you believe another would be better. Thanks.
Comment by Öhm — December 12, 2008 @ 8:12 am
Would you be able to comment on a 30/0/41 build(PvP oriented – non daggers)? Personally I feel this would be a very mobile build for PvP picking up the 5th tier in assassination talents along with a couple points into SF or Murder.
Thanks
Comment by Giladon — December 12, 2008 @ 8:25 am
2. I don’t like this spec. It feels like jack of all trades, master of none, and sometimes you skip out on strong talents for weaker ones. In the least the point in deflection and get vigor, and drop waylay and ghostly (terrible as dags) and get hat. I’m still not a big fan of this build.
3. That spec is similar to my prep mut, i hate not having focused attacks (one of the biggest dps increases in assass) but if you are doing quick open+mut+ finish+ vanish combos I can see this being really good, as least in a world without much resil.
4. If you have vigor, get glyph of vigor.
5. I’ll post a QR shadowstep build after, I had one made up but forgot to post for some reason.
Comment by Akrios — December 12, 2008 @ 9:29 am
http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=fhe0oeMobZZe0fbhbddVzAcR i enjoyed this a bit with the Hemo-Vigor-and Evis glyphs… loads of fun just not sure how fast you can take someone down this way… i loved it because its very agil… maybe i didn’t have the right main hand to do enough dmg…
Comment by spoot — December 12, 2008 @ 9:37 am
I tried HaT with another rogue last night in 25 man naxx and its quite insane. on loatheb we pulled 6500 dps lol. I was using a little bit diff spec though. ill definatly try yours next week though and report back.
Comment by Xanderkrews — December 12, 2008 @ 10:58 am
For PvE Honor Among Thieves build you left out Aggression which increases your eviscerates which imo is used like 90% of the time in 25 mans, once aggression is maxed out blade flurry would be dumb to ignore the dps boost and Ruthlessness is a JOKE with this spec when theres 5 combo points generated in such little time why would you invest points here. Here is my variation, was able to get 4.4k dps on Loatheb last night

Hi ,
first off i would like to thantk you for this amazing site i could learn quite a bit from your vids an guides .
Now im faced with a Problem i wanted to Spec:
http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=fhxfoIMoirsMzZ0xZebfbh0db
because i’ll be playin with a disc priest Arena 2v2.
And in ur Spec i dont understand why Focused Attacks is so essential (prep/muti)
caus in the forums everyone keeps saying its pretty useless for pve.
Hope you read this and give me an answer
P.S keeep the good work up
Comment by Dattebayo — December 12, 2008 @ 2:51 pm
sry i meant that focused attacks is useless for pvp xD
Comment by Dattebayo — December 12, 2008 @ 5:17 pm
Preparation Mutilate is a very reliable spec, been using it for awhile now. Before that, I went 43/15/13 which was nice with the plus 5% to crit and hit

What about vile poisons in the backstab shadowdance spec, atm with low resilience ive left out CD and taken 3 points in vile.. it plays quite a big role in arena i think?
Comment by Deathjester — December 12, 2008 @ 7:14 pm
@Deathjester
Not as much early on as PvP you will find is all about burst currently with damage/resilience ratios the way they are, later on I feel vial will become more desirable as fights last longer and longer.
***I’d like to remind everyone that when creating these builds, we wanted to show the general template for each spec. And we encourage people to move around points to whatever suits you best for your situation, as there is no “right” spec that is gonna please everyone.
Comment by Nition — December 12, 2008 @ 8:34 pm
It all depends on what role you want, PvE, PvP, Arena Support or Single target DPS. There’s a lot of builds out there for each.
Comment by Aggrø — December 12, 2008 @ 8:36 pm
Akrios, I’ve got a question:
Could you upload your Interface ? i remember it f*cked up after the 3.0 patch and u wanted to upload a new interface, when the addons get an update. Would be very nice, cause I like your INterface and would like to play with it again.

Comment by ike — December 13, 2008 @ 9:06 am
Hi,
Just wanted to share this spec with u, i think it is great both PvE and PvE
u get mutilate from assassination tree and the 30% crit bonus and vigor
and from the combat tree u get the 5% crit for dagger, DW , 5% hit, imp sprint which i believe gives little mobilty, and Balde Flurry, which i believe would shine with some mutilates
and from the Subtelty tree, u get OPP ,imp stealth and dirty tricks
42/22/7

Comment by Forcas — December 13, 2008 @ 12:28 pm
Akrios / Nition, what sort of skill rotation would i be required to do in order to do some decent dps with the 51/13/7 build you have noted at the top of this article?
I have always played combat swords from my early MC days and have only taken deep assassination specs seriously within the last couple of weeks, any help? Just as a side note i currently have both S’revenge and Anarchy because i couldnt see them get d/e’d
Comment by Korshub — December 13, 2008 @ 1:48 pm
pvp: multilate + prep
Prefair imp kidney instead of quick recovery… Just because of 2n2 with shadowp
Comment by John — December 13, 2008 @ 3:17 pm
I prefer Quick Recovery over Kidney because even if on of your moves fail, you can bust out another one without waiting for your energy to recharge. I’ve always gone with Quick Recovery while in the Assassination tree
Comment by Aggrø — December 13, 2008 @ 10:44 pm
9% more Dmg form all sources > 40 energy from Eviscerate
Comment by John — December 14, 2008 @ 5:01 am
But they thing is, you don’t always have kidney shot up. Sure it’s a beast in Arenas, but in World PvP and BGs I’d spend the points in something else

its PVE spec ofc
Comment by Running_chicken — December 15, 2008 @ 10:45 am
Im having some trouble with rotations, running with 51/13/7 but i cant really seem to figure out wich finishers pay of the most, rupture vs evisc dun seem to matter anymore. And envenom and evisc is doing more or less the same damage, although with envenom you get the extra instant poison procs ofc. Anyway, anyone got some tips on whats working best for them as muti?
Comment by Willie — December 15, 2008 @ 3:47 pm
@30 (Willie)
I have been running the Mutilate PvE build for the raiding in Wotlk and pretty much popping a SnD after Ambush then mutilate to 4/5 points and evisc and refreshing Hunger for Blood before it drops pretty much keeps me as high as i can be on the DPS. Im not touching Rupture or Envenom and running double wound poisen allways.
I tested other dps rotations but it seems this for me is the highest.
Comment by Tpk — December 15, 2008 @ 6:47 pm
@ Willie and Tpk-
if you are running 51/13/7 why on earth would you ever eviscerate?
envenom hits harder, provides more dps with the poison buff and isnt mitigated by armor.
PVE muti doesnt have a rotation so much as it has a priority system…
open and get SnD up asap, maximize uptime on rupture and NEVER let hunger fall off… in all other cases, envenom!
Comment by mrninja — December 15, 2008 @ 7:37 pm
First off I love this site thanks so much for creating it . You’ve taught me much.
I would like a little CONSTRUCTIVE criticism on the following spec I am trying out . The goal was to get as much DPS as possible w/o sacrificing too much survivability. SS would be the primary combo builder for maintaining SnD and rupture with BF up as often as possible. Many have told me to just ditch the subtree all together but it just seems to represent what a rogue should be more so than the rest of the trees. I tried a mut spec for a bit but it just isnt as much fun imo. I am currently sitting at lvl 77 so here is what it looks like I plan on adding in HAT with the final 3 pts l8r.
http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/classes/rogue/talents.html?tal=00000000000000000000000000002520520001050100000000000005320232030322120350105001000

Hello, my question is how do you guys intend to hit 5% hit in pvp, without Precision, since I noticed that pvp gear doesn’t have any hit on it, is gemming hit a solution?
Comment by Prodigal — December 16, 2008 @ 7:29 am
@32 (mrninja)
I have found my Evisc crits way more from talents + glyph and hits for more.
This is the reason im using it over Envenom. Also wounding poisen stacks way more dmg than deadly atm which you need for envenom…..
In the end my evisc spam is doing more dps than using envenom from my test so far.
Comment by Tpk — December 16, 2008 @ 8:02 am
For an arena mutliate build what do you think of moving the 3 points from Ruthlessness to Vile Poisons? I’m thinking I’d have the extra dmg from poisons than a 60% chance to add a combo every time I throw a finisher.
Comment by cloaknpoke — December 16, 2008 @ 9:56 am
@38 (cloaknpoke)
I agree, wounding poison does a lot of damage currently, and the 30% dispel resist on them is great for keeping them up.
I currently run the same build as the one mentioned above however with the 3 points in Vile Poisons also.

Comment by ephoe — December 18, 2008 @ 9:27 am
hey Akrios on my rogue im pve combat swords i do around 4k dps on everything in 25 man naxx depends on the boss fight and i saw your pve combat spec build and i was excactly that spec before when i kept taking aggro in heroics and stuff that my UA would proc and i would almsot die becuase of it and i dont reckon it is pve reliable so i took my points out of that and put em in nerves of steel for incase i get feared and i got a dot on me and yes i know its preff for pvp but it has its advantages in pve aswell
…before when my grp would wipe if some downie screwed up or somthing i would vanish but they atked me and i some how always dodge and die coz of my UA proced and i would get raped so it screwed me over sometimes.
c ya around
p.s. thanks for the kickass mut pvp spec goin mut/prep spec when dual specs comin out got some sexy daggers waiting for me
Comment by Nocrits — December 18, 2008 @ 9:47 am
What would say was the best in PVP, dagger or sword?
I would say dagger because of ambush, multilate, backstab and stuff like that, but sword dmg harder, so im not sure.

i have been 80 since the 3rd week of the expansion and i must say that this spec is god in pvp. With this spec its just Shadowsteb> Ambush etc. and they’re done for.
http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=f0xfoxZZebfbhMdbAzAbRt
Comment by OMG a Rogue — December 29, 2008 @ 5:04 am
I have been 80 for about 2 weeks, and my PVE spec is 16/51/4 and it works better to me then mutilate 51/13/7. What im thinking is, when higher gear is obtained combat will prove to be the most superior. In combat you get most of your dps from white damage, while in mutilate i have noticed i got majority of dps from my special abilites (mutilate, envenom ect..) I have also noticed as in combat my poisons do a lot for me, at least 5% of my dps and when you use envenom it takes away your deadly poisons, meaning you lose damage when envenom and eviscerate do around the same damage in the long run, what is the big hype about envenom!? Currently standing 2700 dps close quarters combat
Comment by Gillardino — December 29, 2008 @ 9:05 am
Here is my spec if anyone wants to try with a 4 CP SND to 5 CP rupture rotation…
Assasination:
5/5 Malice
2/2 Blood Splatter
3/3 Ruthlessness
5/5 Lethality
1/1 Vigor (with glyph can get you 20 extra energy)
Combat:
2/2 Improved Sinister Strike
5/5 Duel-Wield Specialization
2/2 Improved Slice and Dice
5/5 Precision
5/5 Close quarters combat
2/2 endurance
5/5 aggresion
2/2 Improved sprint
1/1 Blade furry
2/2 Blade twisting
2/2 Expertise
1/1 Adreniline rush
3/3 Vitality
5/5 Combat potency
1/1 Surprise Attacks
2/2 Savage combat
5/5 Prey on the weak
1/1 Killing spree
Subtlety:
4/5 Relentless Strikes
If you choose to try this spec best of luck

Hey there, I had a question for all you rogues out there as well. According to Shadowpanther, some of the best gear to use for PvP is actually PvE items. I have some of these PvE items now, so even though I do super damage, I take super damage. Instead of putting the AP/Hit gems in the sockets, should I change them out for Resil Gems?
Typically you would get the PvP gear with PvE gems/enchants… but since the PvE gear is rated higher than the PvP gear (so far), should we go PvE Gear with PvP gems/enchants (i.e. +resil)?
I would appreciate your thoughts.
Comment by Deamhan — January 3, 2009 @ 5:37 pm
Hey i had already set out a build that was similar to your mut/prep and i feel thats going to be strong, but as i was watching and reading on spreist/rogue teams (thats what i am playing once partner hits 80) imp KS seems to be very prominent. Was hopping for some feedback on this build, i keep the sub tree standard, but i lose murder and 2 points in findweakness to obtain imp KS and keep FA. i also ditched imp eviscerate for ruthlesness and vile poisons. Havn’t tried it out much but for bg’s but feedback would be tight.

Here is my armory http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Anetheron&n=Edondia. Whats the latest info on weapon speeds and poisons? I was using webbed death in MH and sinister revenge in OH before with instant on MH and deadly OH, but now i got twilight mist aswell, another 1.8 speed dagger, should i use it instead of webbed death(1.4)? and instant on MH or OH? i’ve heard arguments for both but havent really had time to try it out extensively. So tips would be welcome thanks.

Fastest weapon in your MH, with Deadly on it, the other OH and Instant.
And ideally you want dual fast weapons like dual webbed death, 1.80 is kinda slow.
So for example MH/OH – 1.30/1.40 (entry level raiding Librarian’s Paper Cutter/Saronite Shiv combo), 1.40/1.50 (Naxx level Webbed Death/Murder combo).
However currently there is still a bug with Mutilate (getting fixed in 3.0.8) that gives double poison proc chance on your offhand poison, making it more beneficial to put your fastest weapon in your offhand for more poison applications, hence the confusion. In this case the combos above would be 1.40/1.30 and 1.50/1.40 respectively.
So fastest in your off hand until 3.0.8 hits.

So I have been combat forever but now i am going to give Mut daggers a try. I got a Knife of Incision last night in Naxx and have a librarian’s paper cutter in the bank, so am I better off buying a second cutter do to the faster speed or do the other stats and higher dps make up for the 1.8 knife? Thanks
Comment by Archie — January 14, 2009 @ 12:58 pm
Archie, it’s probably easiest to check that using the spreadsheets from Elitist Jerks.
http://elitistjerks.com/f78/t27244-roguecraft_spreadsheet/
Input your gear, arrange poisons, put your LPC in the main hand, and then try Knife of Incision in your offhand first, and then a second LPC.

Hey, i’ve been messing around with the test dummys trying to figure out exactly how I wanted my 51/13/7 spec to be and recently tried putting a point into deadly brew so I could go with instant on both weapons. I saw a noticable boost against the boss dummy, from 1940 ish to over 2200 dps. Just thought I would throw this out there, btw im not sure if crippling poison gets applied to endgame bosses or not, I will test it out tonight.
Comment by theninjamongoose — January 16, 2009 @ 4:38 pm
On most endgame bosses, it doesn’t as they are immune to slows.
Comment by Vaio — January 16, 2009 @ 5:49 pm
hi im a full epic lvl 80 rogue.
what i did as i turned 80 i spec combat fist weps and started in low end pve content untill i had build 400 hit rating,
then i spec muti to melt faces i think the muti is best but only if you have good hit rating if not go combat and use roation of ss untill 5cp SND kill spree ss untill 5 pc rupture adrinalin rush blade flurry tricket and fuck own!!!

Comment by Elanar — January 19, 2009 @ 7:29 am
How could dual fast weapons possibly beat dual slow weapons in dps? I realize that if you have 1.4/1.4 you will proc crits faster and therefore gain more energy over the right but if you have 1.8/1.8 your mutilate will be hitting for a substantially higher damage per energy used. Maybe there’s some game mechanics i’m missing so if you see a flaw in my logic let me know. I currently have twilight mist in both hands (1.8/1.8) and i’m easily going over 3k dps in raid
Comment by easton — January 21, 2009 @ 5:28 pm
@easton
IP MH/ DP OH, 1.4 means more focused attack procs and more IP procs, 1.4/1.8 (WD/Sin Rev) 1.4/1.4 (WD/WD) are currently equal or very close to equal, always IP on MH though and put your faster dagger in the MH.

There is always one thing that really strikes me as odd: Why does no rogue play shdowdance in PvP?
It looks like awsome burst, high mobility, all the goodies like cheat death aso, preparation, all you want, and noone uses it, does anyone know why?
Comment by Ice — February 2, 2009 @ 7:40 am
Becouse it sux,you can have “better” pvp builds then pvp shadowdance

Well… with the up coming nerf to mutilate I’ve came up with a few specs to help increase our damage. I haven’t had time to try them out but if anyone does send some feedback please.
Just a quick note on the changes:
Rogue (Skills List / Talent + Glyph Calc.)
* Hunger for Blood (Assassination): Now increases damage 5% per stack, (up from 3%.)
* Mind Numbing Poison now reduces cast time by 30%, down from 60%.
* Mutilate damage will now do 20% increased damage against poisoned targets, down from 50%.
* Slice and Dice: This ability now increases melee attack speed by 40%, up from 30%.

Of course, time will only tell if these will work, same goes for the nerf, it may not be as bad as everyone thinks it is… except DKs will now be even more OP then they already are since just about every other class is getting a ‘nerf’ in some way, shape or form.
Comment by Aggrø — February 9, 2009 @ 3:07 pm
Seeing as most rogues don’t carry two SN’s (or even one) regardless of how many H Naxx’s we run, I’d suggest letting the concept of holding onto mutilate’s “crazy burst” go and focus on keeping high damage up instead while still holding strong burst potential if you’re going to keep the spec. Since you’ve got 5 points into DWS anyways, why not capitalize on that with improved SnD? Imagine how much pressure you could put on someone with garrote(glyphed), rupture, and SnD going on someone while mutilates are goin off with this build?
http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=fhefoxMoiroczZ0gZebfbh0d
This would absolutely keep damage through the roof against any class as well as allow you to hold that vital utility gained from trickling down towards the mid subtlety tree.
Granted rogues are as squishy as can be, this would be decreasingly viable as you cross into 3’s and 5’s, with well timed evasions and vanishes the mutilate spec would only be taking a hit to insta-burst, but not total damage… unless I’m completely missing something.
I’m going to spec back to sub though (; it’s been good to me earlier this season so I’d love to give it another go.
Comment by Steg — February 9, 2009 @ 5:21 pm
So… i am wandering how can rogues be better in DPSing in partys and raids… couse i’ve made much respecialisations, but nothing works… i is told that you need to have 3K DPS (normal without De-buffs) to kill Malygos. I have good gear 3items (T7) and much Epic items… But i can’t make more than 2100 DPS in party and no more than 2300 in raid for 10 players? Can someone tell what is the best for the moment spec for PvE Rogue, and what weapons to use ?
Comment by StormSeeker — February 10, 2009 @ 11:56 am
well atm i use
41 / 5 / 25
http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=fhecoxMoirofzZ0xZIbfbhbdb such warriat
and i dont feel “big” nerf ~300-400 less dmg on mutilate but i gain that dmg in eviscerate

So, after reading all this about weps, Should faster dagger be on main hand or offhand?
or should faster be on offhand?
Ex: MH 1.8/OH 1.6
or
MH 1.6/OH 1.8
???? for mutilate, which will do more dmg
Comment by Spyderus — February 15, 2009 @ 1:13 pm
I use the warglaives then use that build q I find very good:

me to removing a lot of damage and owno any class!
that build for me of the for playing in the peace! I use her for wars, events and x1. And in the stances 95% I am in the leader of the damage (%) and leader in the dps!
Comment by speedkiller — February 28, 2009 @ 2:21 pm
my rogue is in an average social raiding guild on Azjol Nerub, we have cleared nax voa and sarth 25 and are surrently working on maly (all 10 is done) so my gear is ok but not uber.
the spec i use atm is mace combat, i find with my trinket from naxx with HR and armour pen proc and the maces spec i have up to 67% armour penetration, this seems to majorly buff my white dmg whic as you all know is the main source of raid dmg combat rogues do. Currently im using Evisc as my only finishing dmg move while maintaining SnD and my dmg output is at 3.6kdps average.
i was shocked tbh, i thought that fist spec would be top dps because of the crit but when i bought a mace my dps went up and when i get an OH mace it will go up again.
just my input on combat from exp so far i have had 156dps weapons of fist sword and mace and the dps order in the same gear was
Mace
Sword
Fist

Comment by Kryael — March 12, 2009 @ 5:23 am
well zippo im not sure that the mace was the cause for the sudden jump in your dps, i know with next patch mace cbt will own all, but i noticed you said you kept SnD up and just eviscerated,if you keep snd and rupt up and snd if u have time during the rotation not letting either one drop, you’ll throw alot more dps.
Comment by thugish1 — March 13, 2009 @ 1:39 pm
and eviscerate when you have time** sorry =)
Comment by thugish1 — March 13, 2009 @ 1:41 pm
so?… what is the reason MUTILATE speck use fastest weapon in MH and slowest in OH?
Comment by zl — April 1, 2009 @ 5:42 am
for pve, you want your slow off hand for deadly poison, and a quick main hand for instant poison, deadly is off hand so you can shiv it when you need to. Best way to go atm is 2 fast weapons, until 3.1 when poison procs the same regardless of speed, then itll be 2 slow for big mutilates.
Comment by Bendickson — April 1, 2009 @ 12:25 pm
So as soon as 3.1 comes out rogues with mutilate shoould switch to two slow weapons?
Comment by Roberto Torrealba — April 3, 2009 @ 9:45 am
right now the ideal set up it fast weps in both hads because of the way poison procs work (chance on hit). when 3.1 comes (from my understanding and some testing on ptr) slow weps are ideal because poisons are based on a proc per min. adn you’ll hit harder with mutilate.
