Mutilate with RMP, Dealing with Lock Warrior Druid

posted by Akrios on July 18th, 2008

Playing Mutilate with RMP

This week I had the chance to play some RMP. I was looking to try mutilate again after the nerf to cheat death and hemo. Surprisingly, I found it to be similar in effectiveness to when I was playing as shadowstep. Realistically I’m sacrificing an opener and if my target gets away, there isn’t much I can do to catch up.

Other than that, I haven’t noticed a huge downfall in playing mutilate with this comp. I’m still a somewhat poor choice for a constant target for most teams, and without cheat death I don’t notice a big difference in survivability between mutilate and shadowstep. I think that at this point mutilate has become a lot closer to shadowstep in viability when playing with a healer and caster in 3v3. Playing double melee or 3 dps burst comps would still likely prefer a subtlety spec as the cooldowns to stay on a target or survive without a healer simply don’t exist as mutilate.

I tried a poison heavy 41/20/0 while playing. I still want to experiment with a deep assassination build, although I believe that lends itself more to playing outlast or in 5v5.

Warrior, Warlock, Druid, the strongest overall 3v3 lineup?

The supremecy of different arena comps is constantly changing. What I’ve discovered recently is just how dominant the warrior, warlock, druid combination is when played effectively. Where a rogue can only lock down a single target, a warrior has to mobility to quickly use physical and aoe snares and reliable stuns to keep their teammates alive. This team setup is extremely balanced, having a chance to win against most setups. We started learning this really on TR, where teams like BMFC or Inactive gave any comp I ran a lot of trouble. The hardest counters to this would likely be shadowpriest, ua lock, resto shaman or some 3 dps lineup, but these teams are generally kept out of the top by the dominance of rogue teams, which in turn get eaten by warrior lock druid.

Music: Paint it Black – Rolling Stones

Our rmp has been pretty successful against this comp until we ran into alexandra (now nerdkiller, the warrior I dueled in my last pvp video) vorrent and shinanigans. The ability of this particular team to peel, the warlock knowing when to use fel hunter dispel, and their strong coordination is what set them apart in my mind, combined with alexandra’s access to pve gear.

Basically our priest had too much of a difficulty attempting to fear a druid with the combination of warrior snares and curse of exhaustion. Our inability to get real cc chains on the druid coupled with perception negating a chance of an opener really sealed the deal in a lot of our games. Despite being put on farm I decided to upload our best fight against them today (above). The general pattern was us running out of mana before them, and rmp is not designed to outlast.

3v3 Video in the Works

I’ve started recording clips for a general 3v3 video. I’ll be playing both shadowstep and mutilate in a variety of different comps, and it’s about half done.

  1. I would try the 41/20 mutilate build with expose armor and 2/3 in kidney shot. I havent experienced a lot with heavy mutilate builds because in my opinion it just sacrifices too much damage. A lot of people say it provides more control but i try to control with damage instead of poisons. I figure if the enemy is going to cleanse my poisons then whats the point of putting more points into poisons than i already have?

I always shiv crippling anyways to keep my enemies from running around and if the enemy really wants to dispel, cleanse…then they will do it….but i will shiv away again before they run away.

Putting up 3-4 cp of expose armor with the talent and using slice and dice plus waiting for energy to use mutilate will put a disc priest into defensive mode to heal himself 100% of the time, even if they have the little bubble on themselves. Expose armor also helps me against those super resilience sl/sl locks that seem to live forever.

Against druids i will try to fit in a 4-5 cp expose armor so that even when they turn into bear form they still take as much dmg as possible. But then again when i get a druid team i just pray that they suck or hope we can keep him cc’ed as long as possible……but at the bracket you are in, most likely they do not suck.

One thing that i would like to try is the 54/0/7 build putting 3/3 in eviscerate. A lot of times im able to bring an enemy to near death but then lack the on demand dmg that eviscerate with talent provides because i do not have enough energy for a mutilate, giving the healer enough time to heal my target. Besides mutilate there arent any other on demand dmg attacks for mutilate builds except for shiv…..

The only thing that im afraid of would be the lack of improved sprint. Without improved sprint i feel like mages, druids and even good hunters (specially mages) would destroy me. For mutilate builds mages are very very squishy when we hit them. We can bring them from 100% to 30-40% in a matter of seconds (if they let you hit them) but with all their kiting moves, i believe that improved sprint is a must against mages.

I tried a RWP team and we got up to 1540 (around that, i dont remember the actual rating) but then that was with an undergeared disc priest with s1/s2 and 1 or 2 pieces of vindicators…in other words extremely squishy. My question is what do we do when the enemy focuses on the the priest?

I also run a rogue warlock team thats in the 1660 something rating with about 30 something games played so far. Now a lot of times i find is that the lock lacks on demand burst. They got nothing except the instant proc shadowbolts. What should the lock be doing when we are trying to burst down a target while the other target is cc’ed?

My game character is “Lagann” in the allience exodar realm. I would mostly be grateful to you to check out my armory and give me some tips into improving my equipment for a rogue sl/sl lock team. I have questions about my trinkets to the rings i should use for 2v2 with the sl/sl lock (my main focus right now). Should i be using the battlemasters trinket or the bloodlust brooch? should i use vindicator/agelistas revenge or vindicator/guardians combo? Are my gems right or should i change them? Im low on arena points so should i get s3 or wait for s4 helm? Should i use the guardians pendant or the shattered sun pendant (aldors)?

My s1 chest will be changed to s2 if i have enough honor (farming honor with alliance is the worst nightmare ever) and will eventually change it to s4 when i get enough arena points. Also looking at my armory what should i get first? the s4 chest or s3/s4 helm? Also i do not play a whole lot so a lot of the high end trinkets you can get from raids are not possible for me.

    Thank You

  2. @ Akrios

Why don’t you open with a 5 point expose armor on the lock in the video rather than going straight into a kidney shot? You will do a hell of a lot more damage ignoring basically all of his base armor, that’s like ~20% damage increase…

    Comment by ratatat — July 19, 2008 @ 7:24 am

  3. for some reason, i always thought using 5 points into EA on a lock is a waste.
i DO always use 5 into EA on priests of all kind and other that wear mails…
from my understanding, locks only have around 2k armor and it’d be a waste to EA. i’d rather, personally, KS the lock with 5 to put pressure on their healer?

    Comment by bevilefaca — July 19, 2008 @ 8:20 am

  4. ^ Locks have 3k + armor so and an imp expose armor removes around 3k (plus whatever armor ignore you have)

    Comment by Swipe AA — July 19, 2008 @ 8:31 am

  5. even if at around 3k armor, (with usual ~1k ignore armor with S3+ gears), wouldnt it still be a waste to put the first 5 into EA in 3s with druid healing?
im not entirely sure but if 5 points “can” be used to put more pressure on their healer… wouldnt it be better?

  11. While we’re on the subject of Mutilate… I’ve heard it argued that offhand weapon speed is not going to play a huge factor in single mutilate hit damage (crit or non-crit). Can anyone give some substance to this claim or prove otherwise?

    Comment by Vaelar — July 21, 2008 @ 9:24 am

  12. Vaelar, Mutilate is one attack that does 2 hits. Main hand hit, Off hand hit. In all cases your main hand is going to do more dmg unless the offhand crits and the mainhand doesnt (which rarely happens) but a heavier weapon will indeed increase the dmg from your mutilate (Check the dagger sets: Gladiators shanker, gladiators shiv, and the other off-hand gladiators mutilator)

Im a mutilate and i’ve been one for quite some time now, (check the armoury to see my spec). Ive tried full mutilate, combat mutilate, sublety mutilate and full mutilate. As a mutilate rogue in your position I would either drop the lock or get focus more on core dmg, I’m wondering how you start combat?

What I ussualy do I wait by the sideline to avoid getting sapped -_-
(since im not sublety cept for oppertunity to increase my mutilate dmg)
If there are no invis people on the other hand or if its a mage i sap something (preferably their healer if they have one) and start hard on their dps. Cheap shot
Mutilate (At this point my poisons have had a 99% proc rate on my target(Thanks apply poison talent) so my next mutilate should hurt him allot but its not time for that yet) Kidney shot, Mutilate, now depending on my combo points ill do either Expose armour (if i have 4) if i have 3 ill mutilate and expose again.
(Now is going to be a hard time because i have no energy and no combo points but just mellee the target and try to keep on him (shouldnt be to hard looking at all cooldowns (dodge, vanish, cloak, sprint) and the fact that hes crippled)
Now try building some combo points with some dmg with mutilate.
(mutilate is going to hurt because of the exposed armour and 50% bonus dmg from your poisons.)

Ofcourse keep in mind to screw the healer over as much as you and your partner can gouges curses kicks, arcane torrents etc etc, just scare him (but dont use very valuable cc’s yet because of the diminishing return)

Ok when you have 5 combo points go and save your energy till you have 120.
Then while he is exposed (i pressume he still is since he has been exposed with 5 combo points) kidney shot. Now is your time to shine, hes exposed, poisoned in your kidney shot all improving your dmg.. mutilate twice, then use cold blood eviscerate (hes prolly going to be out kidney when u do the eviscerate but np) if you focus dmg here (with your partner) and cc healer (with your partner) your target should be dead. if not, rince and repeat :) .

  15. Playing RPM means alot of awesomeness, as you have room to move with mages CC, mass disp, and etc.
But, our problem consists of 2 healers, when the second healer never wants to be CCed at the same time as the second, as DRs start hitting in, we’ve pretty much lost. I am ShS with maces btw.

    Comment by Kylling — July 28, 2008 @ 9:36 pm

  16. Only 2 healer team I see is with Priest+Druid.

Get on the warrior, Rogue and Mage CC the Priest, your Priest Fears and Mana Burns their Druid.

Get both healers to trinket, time your CC`s with a Sheep or Blind + Fear on both and finish off the warrior.
